HIST 3101. American Indian History to 1865 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. An
ethno-historical approach to the diverse histories of the Indian Peoples
of North America to 1865 with special emphasis on Native American voices
and southeastern culture.

HIST 3105. History of Georgia (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of the political, economic, and social development of Georgia from the pre-Columbian period until the present viewed in relationship to its position in American history. Satisfies legislative requirement for GA history.
HIST 3106. U. S. History since 1945 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. A study of American politics, society, and foreign policy from 1945 until the early 1990s with an emphasis on the Cold War, the "Imperial Presidency," the Vietnam War, and societal changes.
HIST 3115. African American History to 1865 (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. A survey beginning with African background and tracing the establishment of slavery as the dominant fixture in the colonial south while revealing the impact of African Americans on the economics, politics, and values of the nation.
HIST 3116. African American History since 1865 (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of African American as freedman in 1865 and tracing the social economic, and political adjustments and advancements during the 19th and 20th century.
HIST 3119. Introduction to Russia and Eastern Europe (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. An introduction to the arts, culture, geography, history, and politics of Russia and Eastern Europe with a concentration on the last two centuries and contemporary events.
HIST 3120. Introduction to Public History (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course with a grade of C or better. An introduction to the methods and techniques utilized by historians and related professionals in archives, historical societies, historic sites, libraries, museums, and state and national government agencies. Students will also be introduced to resources that will assist them in identifying potential careers in public
history.
HIST 3125. Historical Methods (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. An introduction to research techniques and concepts used in the writing of history. Representative historians and their works will be studied. It is recommended that history majors complete this course the first semester of their junior year.
HIST 3126. History in Film (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. A study of historical subjects presented in film. Students will develop the ability to analyze, evaluate, and discuss the elements of film, particularly as those elements are used for constructing representations of history in film.
HIST 3127. Introduction to Modern Africa (3-0-3) Prerequisite:
Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of African history from the
colonial era to the present.
HIST 3128. Introduction to Traditional Africa (3-0-3) Prerequisite:
Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of African history from human
evolution to the colonial era.
HIST 3129. Modern Britain (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or
2000 level HIST course. Investigates the modern history of the British
peoples from "The Glorious Revolution" to the eclipse of Britain in the
20th century.
HIST 3135. Introduction to Latin American History (3-0-3) Prerequisite;
Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of Latin American History from the pre-Columbian era to the present.
HIST 3136. Indigenous Peoples of Latin America (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. A historical survey of the indigenous groups of Latin America, from before European contact to the contemporary period.
HIST 3137. Latin America and the United States (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Historical survey of relations between Latin America and the United States.
HIST 3146. American Military History (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Survey of American military history from the seventeenth century to present.
HIST 3147. American Economic History (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. Major economic developments in the United States from colonial times.
HIST 3169. History of Women in the U.S. (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course. A survey of the roles women have played in
United States history.
HIST 4000. Baccalaureate Examination in History (0-0-0) Prerequisite: Consent of department chair and completion of all requirements for graduation. Exit course required for all history majors. Satisfactory grade in this course indicates completion of the baccalaureate examination for the BA degree in history. (S/U grading.)
HIST 4698. Internship (1-6 hours) Prerequisite: consent of the department chair. Experience in applied history (museums, historical societies, historic preservation, archival collections) under close faculty supervision. (S/U grading.)
HIST 4795. Senior Research Seminar (3-0-3) Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better, all major course requirements and consent of department chair.
After reading and class discussion of historical works on an assigned theme, students will write a major research paper under the direction of the faculty. The theme under study varies each semester.
HIST 4899. Independent Study (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Completion of twelve semester hours of history courses numbered 3000 or higher, HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better, and consent of department chair. Areas and topics of study vary with
instructors. May be taken twice for credit.
HIST 5105. History of Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Any 1000 or 2000 level HIST course and HIST 3125,
each with a grade of C or better. The history of Columbus and the Chattahoochee
Valley from the pre-Colombian period until the present which explores the
relationship between local developments and those on the state, regional, and national levels.
HIST 5109. American Frontier (3-0-3)
Undergraduate Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with C or better.
Graduate Prerequisite; HIST 6101
with C or better (graduates). This course provides an introduction to the history of the American frontier from the period of discovery to the late nineteenth century. The primary goal of this course is for students to understand the major themes of the American frontier through the study of its people, institutions, and major events. We will explore the conquest, settlement, and development of the frontier from a multi-cultural perspective as well as gain a better understanding of how frontier experiences shaped the development of the United States.
HIST 5110. State and Society in the Early American Republic (3-0-3)
Undergraduate Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better.
Graduate Prerequisite: HIST 6101 with C or better. This course provides an introduction to the history of the Early American Republic from roughly 1800 to 1850. The primary goal of this course is for students to understand the major themes of the Early Republic through the study of its people, institutions, and major events. We will explore key transformations during this period to gain a better understanding of how developments during this time period shaped the course of U.S. history.
HIST 5111. New South (3-0-3)
Undergraduate Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better.
Graduate Prerequisite: HIST 6101 with C or better. The New South is a
topical survey of the history of the American South from 1865 to the present.
Special emphasis is given to defining the South as a cultural region, analyzing
the image of the South as constructed in popular media, and exploring issues of
race, class, and gender.
HIST 5112. American Slavery and Emancipation, 1619-1877 (3-0-3)
Undergraduate Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better.
Graduate Prerequisite: HIST 6101 with C or better. This course examines
the institution of slavery and the process of emancipation in British North America
and the United States, from 1619 to the end of the Reconstruction Era. Lectures,
discussions, and readings will consider such themes and topics as the Atlantic
Slave Trade, racial identity, slave uprisings, abolitionism, slave culture, the
impact of the Civil War on slavery, and a comparative look at emancipation in the
United States and other parts of the Western Hemisphere.
HIST 5113. Oral History (3-0-3)
Undergraduate Prerequisite: HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better.
Graduate Prerequisite: HIST 6101 with C or better. This course will explore the purpose, value, theory, method and achievement of oral history. It is intended to provide opportunities to become familiar with theoretical and practical issues in collecting, interpreting, and preserving oral remembrances. Students also will gain experience in conducting, processing, and interpreting their own interviews.
HIST 5195. Historiography (3-0-3) Undergraduate Prerequisite; HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better. This seminar analyzes the discipline of history and examines how historians' questions and methods of analysis have changed over time.
HIST 5201. American Reform and Radicalism, 1877-present (3-0-3) Undergraduate Prerequisite;
HIST 3125 with a grade of C or better. Graduate Prerequisite; HIST 6101 with C or better. This course examines the history of American reform movements and their radical alternatives from 1877 to the present. Readings and lectures will consider such themes, topics, and issues as the Populist Revolt of the 1890s, the birth of the modern labor movement, American socialism and anarchism, Progressivism, the 1920s Ku Klux Klan, communists during the Great Depression, the New Deal, the civil rights movement, the rise and fall of the New Left, the anti-war movement of the 1960s, Black Nationalism, modern feminism, and radical environmentalism.
HIST 5535. Selected Topics in Latin American History (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Any 1000
or 2000 level HIST course and HIST 3125, each with a grade of C or better. Selected topics in Latin
American history, from the pre-Columbian era to the present. May be taken twice for credit if topic varies.

Topics may include Russia and the nationalities, intellectual history of Russia, Russian workers and society or history of Russian women. May be taken twice for credit.
