MUSC 1000. Music Convocation (0-3-0) A laboratory experience to include student recitals, guest performances, master classes, lectures, and meetings. May be repeated. Attendance by non-majors is encouraged. (S/U grading)

MUSC 1070. Orchestral Ensemble Activities (0-5-1) Prerequisite: Approval of Instructor. Rehearsal and performance of orchestral and string ensemble literature. The course exists as a variety of ensembles: CSU Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and String Ensembles (of varying instrumentation: String Quartet, String Trio, etc.). Open to all students on an audition basis. The repertoire provides experience of a variety of musical styles. May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 1100. Music Appreciation (3-0-3) Considers great music of the Western world through listening, analysis, and discussion.

MUSC 1215. Music Theory 1 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1305. Principles of four-voice composition in common-practice style. Includes all diatonic chords, and seventh chords, and their inversions.

MUSC 1225. Introduction to Music Study (2-1-2) Co-requisite: MUSC 1305. An introduction to the historical, cultural and stylistic analysis of music. An intensive study of social background, composers and compositions from all style periods of Western music.

MUSC 1305. Music Fundamentals (0-5-2) Fundamentals of pitch and rhythmic notation. Introduction to solfege syllables and to the use of the keyboard. Practice in sight reading pitch and rhythm patterns.

MUSC 1315. Music Skills 1 (0-4-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1305. A laboratory experience involving ear training, sight singing, and keyboard skills.

MUSC 2201. Music Theory 2 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Techniques of modulation, chromatic harmony, and two and three-part forms.

MUSC 2202. Music Theory 3 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2101. Compositional techniques of the 19th and 20th centuries, including forms and impressionist and atonal techniques.

MUSC 2301. Music Skills 2 (0-2-1) Prerequisite: MUSC 1315. A laboratory experience involving ear training, sight-singing, and keyboard skills.

MUSC 2302. Music Skills 3 (0-2-1) Prerequisite: MUSC 2301.Continuation of MUSC 2301 with topics paralleling content of MUSC 2102. Course includes sight-singing, dictation, rhythmic and keyboard exercises.

MUSC 3115. Counterpoint (2-0-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Mastery of the techniques and disciplines of the best practices of 18th century counterpoint.

MUSC 3116. Form and Analysis (2-0-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Analytical method applied to standard and non-standard forms of the 18th and 20th centuries.

MUSC 3117. Instrumentation and Transcription (3-0-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Ranges and characteristics of band and orchestra instruments, and principles of arranging for vocal or instrumental ensembles.

MUSC 3118. Music Theory for the Non-Music Major (3-0-3) Principles of notation, intervals, scales, rhythms, basic sight-singing and dictation, basic keyboard skills, clef reading, triads, seventh chords, elementary analysis, basic forms.

MUSC 3225. Music History to 1750 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Chronological study of the development of Western music from antiquity through the Baroque era using scores, recordings, and readings.

MUSC 3226. Music History 1750-1900 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Continuation of Western music history with examples from the Classical and Romantic periods.

MUSC 3227. Music History 1900-Present (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Continuation of Western music history with examples from 1900 to present.

MUSC 3305. Jazz Improvisation (0-3-1) Prerequisite: MUSC 2101. Introduction to jazz improvisation techniques.

MUSC 4101. Composition 1 (2-0-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 3115. Techniques of composition. Simple exercises and short compositions.

MUSC 4102. Composition 2 (2-0-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 4101. Emphasis on longer compositions for vocal or instrumental combinations.

MUSC 4555. Special Topics in Music (3-0-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. An in-depth study of a selected topic in music. May be taken twice for credit with change of topic.

MUSC 4899. Independent Study (2-3 hours) Prerequisite: Approval of Department Chair. Independent research.

MUSC 5000. Senior Proficiency (0-0-0) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, MUSC 3227, and MUSE 3000. A comprehensive written/aural exam testing all areas of undergraduate study in music, including applied music, theory, skills, history, literature, orchestration, and conducting. For performance majors includes the area of pedagogy. (S/U grading.)

MUSC 5115. Music History Survey (3-0-3) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, and MUSC 3227. Review of the history of Western music and intensive study of selected topics.

MUSC 5117. Introduction to Musicology (3-0-3) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, and MUSC 3227. An introduction to the discipline of Musicology and Ethnomusicology.

MUSC 5140. Music Theory Survey (3-0-3) The chronological study of tonality, melody, harmony, texture, and form as interrelated aspects of music in the Western world and departures found in contemporary music.

MUSC 5216. Choral Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Historical and analytical survey of choral literature from the 16th century to the present.

MUSC 5218. Song Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Survey of art song literature from the 17th century to the present.

MUSC 5219. Jazz History (2-1-2) Prerequisites: MUSC 2102 and MUSC 2302. The course traces the development of jazz from minstrel show days, ragtime, blues, and big bands through current jazz idioms.

MUSC 5221. Organ Literature 1 (2-1-2) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, MUSC 3227. A survey of the origins of organ music from the Dark Ages through the Baroque era. Major composers, organ builders, and organists of each major style period in every major geographic location will be examined and investigated. All major information regarding this literature will be presented and studied.

MUSC 5222. Organ Literature 2 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 5221. A survey of organ literature from the Classical era through the end of the 20th Century. Major composers, organ builders, and organists of each major style period will be examined.

MUSC 5225. Development of Opera (2-1-2) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, and MUSC 3227. The study of music and texts of opera from the origins of the genre through the 20th Century with emphasis on the historical context.

MUSC 5226. Flute Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. A chronological study of important solo literature written for the flute from the 17th century to the present.

MUSC 5227. Guitar Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. This course will study the history and development of the lute and guitar literature from the Renaissance through the contemporary era.

MUSC 5228. Piano Literature through Classicism (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. A survey of the historical, stylistic, formal, and aesthetic features of piano literature from the beginning of keyboard music through the Classic period.

MUSC 5229. Piano Literature Romantic through Contemporary Eras (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. A survey of the historical, stylistic, formal, and aesthetic features of piano literature of the Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary periods.

MUSC 5235. Sacred Music (2-1-2) Prerequisites: MUSC 3225, MUSC 3226, and MUSC 3227. Examination of sacred music of Judeo-Christian worship services from early cultures to the present day with emphasis on individual sectarian contributions.

MUSC 5236. String Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Historical/analytical study of ensemble literature for string instruments from the classical period to the 20th century.

MUSC 5237. Symphonic Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Survey of symphonic literature from the 17th century to the present.

MUSC 5238. Wind Ensemble Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. Historical and analytical survey of wind literature from the chamber, band, and military repertoires. Focus on major composers and standard wind literature from the 16th century to the present.

MUSC 5239. Woodwind Literature (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2102. A chronological study of the literature for woodwind instruments.

MUSC 5245. Music Technology (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 3226. A hands-on approach for musicians to explore new technologies and their application to music. The class will cover audio components, computer software for music, hardware-software compatibility, and synthesizers.

MUSC 6205. Score Analysis (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 5140. Refinement of score reading and music analysis skills relative to each conductor’s area of specialization (chorus, wind ensemble, orchestra) and study of the practical application of these skills in the solution of interpretive and performance problems.
