RESP 2115. Cardiopulmonary Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A comprehensive study of the structure and function of the respiratory system.
RESP 2117. Respiratory Pathophysiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A study of the disease process in obstructive, restrictive, and other lung diseases.
RESP 2118. Pharmacology for Respiratory Care (2-0-2) Prerequisite: RESP 2115. A study of the commonly used cardiopulmonary drugs.
RESP 2215. Respiratory Care Procedures and Equipment (2-2-3) Prerequisites: CHEM 1152 and CHEM 1152L or CHEM 1212 and CHEM 1212L and RESP 2105. Basic therapeutics and equipment for gas, humidity, and aerosol administration, IPPB and incentive spirometry. Some basic pharmacology or aerosolized drugs are included.
RESP 2216. Blood Gases and Hemodynamic Monitoring (2-2-3) Prerequisites: CHEM 1152 and CHEM 1152L or CHEM 1212 and CHEM 1212L. Study of theory and clinical application of blood gas analysis and hemodynamic monitoring.
RESP 2217. Mechanical Ventilation (2-2-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2215. Techniques of mechanical ventilation (e.g., SIMV, PEEP, CPAP, PS) and airway management (e.g., intubation, suctioning).
RESP 2218. Cardiopulmonary Assessment and Pulmonary Function Testing (1-2-2) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A study of cardiopulmonary assessment and pulmonary function testing.
RESP 2305. Clinical Practicum 1: Fundamentals of Respiratory Care (0-20-5) Prerequisites: RESP 2115, RESP 2216, and RESP 2215. Clinical application of didactic knowledge and laboratory skills.
RESP 3115. Health Care System and Ethical Issues (3-0-3) This course covers the structure of the health care system in the U.S. and its effect on patient care. Ethical issues affecting patient interaction and health care decisions are also studied.
RESP 3116. Gerontology and Rehabilitation (3-0-3) This course covers the process of aging and its implications on patient care. Rehabilitation and reconditioning strategies for geriatric patients are also studied.
RESP 3117. Clinical Application of Respiratory Care (2-0-2) This course covers the basic and advanced cardiopulmonary care theories and procedures needed to manage the patient with cardiac and lung disease.
RESP 3119. Neonatal Respiratory Care (3-0-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2118. Provides knowledge necessary for working in a neonatal respiratory intensive care unit. Students will be exposed to topics including fetal development, normal and abnormal deliveries, evaluation of newborn infants, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, pulmonary disorders, and neonatal respiratory care equipment and supplies.
RESP 3225. Intensive Respiratory Care (2-2-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2305. A study of the advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols and intensive respiratory care procedures.
RESP 3226. Clinical Simulations (1-2-2) Prerequisites: RESP 3225 and RESP 4305. Methods of patient care using information-gathering and decision-making strategies.
RESP 3227. Cardiovascular Intensive Care (2-2-3) A study of the pathophysiology of common cardiac and vascular diseases. Management strategies and therapeutic interventions for these diseases are included.
RESP 3305. Clinical Practicum 2: Clinical Application of Respiratory Therapy Procedures (0-20-5) Prerequisite: RESP 2305. Clinical application of didactic knowledge and laboratory skills.
RESP 4305. Clinical Specialization in Intensive Care (0-20-5) Prerequisite: RESP 3305. Clinical application of didactic and laboratory knowledge in the intensive care units.
RESP 4306. Clinical Specialization in Polysomnography (0-20-5) Clinical practice of respiratory care in the sleep laboratory.
RESP 4307. Clinical Specialization in Respiratory Care Education (0-20-5) Clinical practice of respiratory care education in different teaching settings.
RESP 4308. Clinical Specialization in Neonatal Respiratory Care (0-20-5) Clinical practice of respiratory care in the prenatal and neonatal intensive care units.
RESP 4309. Clinical Specialization in Home Respiratory Care (0-20-5) Clinical practice of respiratory care in the non-traditional settings.
