PELM - Physical Education and Leisure Management

PELM 1205. Concepts of Fitness (1-2-2) This course is designed to help students understand the role of fitness and related wellness components including cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition, and nutrition; develop and implement safe and effective personal fitness programs; and, participate in structured physical activities relevant to effective personal fitness plans.

PELM 2205. Introduction to Physical Education and Recreation (2-2-3) Exploration of the historical and philosophical foundations of physical education, recreation, and sport with emphasis on gaining an understanding of the profession and relevant issues.

PELM 2345. Emergency Care and First Aid (0-2-1) Knowledge and skills necessary to respond to common medical emergencies and to identify preventive measures.

PELM 3216. Teaching Dance (1-2-2) Preparation to teach a variety of dance forms in grades P-12. Laboratory experience required.

PELM 3217. Physical Education in the Elementary School (1-4-3)Prerequisite: EDUF 2116; Admission to teacher education. The content and methods of teaching physical education in the elementary school; emphasis on movement education games curriculum. Laboratory experience required.

PELM 3218. Developing Movement Skills in Early Childhood (1-4-3)Prerequisite: Early Childhood Education Major and Admission to Teacher Education. Content and methods for developing movement skills in preschool through grade five; field experience in P-5 setting

PELM 3255. Coaching and Officiating Baseball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate baseball.

PELM 3256. Coaching and Officiating Basketball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate basketball.

PELM 3257. Coaching and Officiating Softball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate softball.

PELM 3258. Coaching and Officiating Football (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate football.

PELM 3310. Physical Education in the Elementary School Lab (0-2-1)Prerequisite: Health and Physical Education major; Co-requisite: PELM 3217. Physical education laboratory experience in a P-5 setting; planning, teaching, and evaluation of lessons.

PELM 3365. Coaching Youth Sports (0-2-1) Planning, organizing, and coaching youth sports. Additional fee required.

PELM 4149. Emergency Care Instructor Training (2-0-2)Prerequisite: PELM 2345. Knowledge, skills, and teaching expertise to achieve selected national instructor level certifications and to function as an emergency care instructor.

PELM 4215. Physical Education at the Middle Level (2-4-4)Prerequisites: PELM 3217 and Admission to Teacher Education program. Introduction to the components of a quality middle school physical education program; young adolescent characteristics, middle level concept, and implications for teaching and curriculum. Emphasis on designing a developmentally appropriate program.

PELM 4245. Physical Activity for Students with Disabilities (2-2-3)Prerequisite: SPED 2256. Program development, teaching techniques, and activity adaptations for special populations.

PELM 4317. Health Related Fitness Education (0-4-2) Prepares pre-service teachers to observe, teach, and assess student wellness in middle and high school. Emphasis on individualizing fitness programs and use of appropriate technology.

PELM 4335. Assessment in Physical Education (1-2-2)Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program. Emphasis on developing assessments for skill, fitness, knowledge and affective development. Includes lab experience in K-12 physical education classes to assess student learning, document progress and enhance motivation.

PELM 4415. Coaching Practicum (0-4-2) Supervised experiences in approved coaching settings. A minimum of 60 lab hours to be required with related seminars and group planning sessions. S/U grading.

PELM 4416. Teaching Practicum in Physical Education (0-4-2) Prerequisite: PELM 3217. Designed to provide students with opportunities to observe and teach P-12 students in the public schools; emphasis on reflective teaching. (S/U grading.)

PELM 4417. Teaching Practicum in Health (0-2-1) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; two HESC content courses. Designed to provide students with opportunities to observe and teach health to middle school students; emphasis on reflective teaching; 30 hours of field experience required. (S/U grading)

PELM 5116. Physical Education and Athletic Administration (3-0-3) Organization and administration of physical education, athletics and related programs.

PELM 5215. The Development of Motor Skills: A Lifespan Perspective (2-2-3)Prerequisite: EDUF 2116. Examines developmental changes that occur in the acquisition of fundamental locomotor and manipulative skills; factors affecting development: information processing differences between children and adults and beginning and skilled performers.

PELM 5216. Physical Education in the High School (2-4-4)Prerequisites: PELM 3217 and Admission to Teacher Education. Curriculum development and methods of teaching physical education in the high school. Laboratory experience is required.

PELM 5217. Teaching Health in P-12 Schools (2-2-3) Methods of teaching health in P-12 schools; curriculum requirements in health education; resources available for health instruction.

PELM 5485. Student Teaching in Health and Physical Education (0-40-10)Prerequisites: PELM 3217, PELM 4215 or PELM 6216, PELM 5216 and Admission to Teacher Education. Observation and instruction in health and physical education. Cooperative supervision by selected P-12 teachers and college faculty. (S/U grading)

PELM 5545. Selected Topics in Physical Education and Leisure Management (1-3 hours)Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Selected topics in exercise science, health and physical education, or recreation and park administration. May be taken twice for credit.

PELM 5795. Seminar in Physical Education (1-0-1)Prerequisite: Junior standing. A focused study of issues affecting physical education. Topics may vary between offerings. May be repeated.

PELM 5899. Independent Study (1-3 hours)Prerequisite: Departmental approval. An individual research project approved in advance by the instructor and department chair. May be taken twice for credit.

PELM 6115. Curriculum Development in Physical Education (3-0-3) Study of innovative curricula aimed at developing a "physically educated person". Examines curricular models, issues and trends, scope and sequence, outcomes, and assessment.

PELM 6116. Analysis of Teaching Behavior in Physical Education (3-0-3)Prerequisite: Previous teaching experience at the P-12 or college level. Techniques and instruments for identifying and evaluating teaching behaviors with emphasis on research findings and their application to physical education.

PELM 6117. Social Development in Physical Education: Working with At-Risk Students (3-0-3) Prepares teachers to work with students who are considered at-risk, especially those at risk for dropping out or becoming involved with drugs, gangs or violence. Emphasis on developing a social responsibility plan for physical education.

PELM 6118. Legal Issues in Physical Education and Sports (3-0-3) Designed to develop knowledge of liability and safety issues in physical education and athletics in P-12 programs.

PELM 6119. Assessment in Physical Education (3-0-3) Focused study on the role of assessment and evaluation. Emphasis on practical application of student assessment based on realistic outcomes.

PELM 6135. Teaching P-12 Fitness (3-0-3) In-depth knowledge of the parameters that define and affect fitness and conditioning; application of research findings; methods for teaching.

PELM 6215. Physical Education for Children (2-2-3) Theories upon which traditional and contemporary programs for children in grades P-5 are based; current research and relationships between theory and practice. Team teaching experience.

PELM 6216. Middle Level Physical Education (2-2-3) Introduces current research in middle level education and provides a forum for discussing the components of a quality middle level physical education program. Practical application of research emphasized throughout the course.

PELM 6217. Physical Education in the Secondary School (2-2-3) Provides the student with theoretical and research-based knowledge in physical education and the opportunity to improve physical education teaching skills; field experience required.

PELM 6219. Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (2-2-3) Planning, implementing, and evaluating physical education programs for students with disabilities.

PELM 6226. Funding and Grants (1-4-3)Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Identification and acquisition of grants, foundation monies, and related resources.

PELM 6275. Movement Education in Early Childhood (2-2-3) Content and instructional procedures for teaching physical education to young children; emphasis on movement education conceptual framework, developmentally appropriate equipment and practices, and current literature in the field.

PELM 6515. Selected Topics in Physical Education (2-0-2) Formal class study of selected topics relevant to the teaching of physical education, e.g. Physical Education for Preschool Children; Current Professional Literature, and Issues in Motor Development.

PELM 6795. Contemporary Issues in Physical Education (2-0-2) Addresses professional issues and trends that affect physical educators; analysis of contemporary policy, practice, research, and theory applied to the teaching of physical education.

PELM 6899. Independent Study (1-3 hours)Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Intensive study in an area of special interest in physical education approved in advance by the advisor.
