Buena Vista General Store (MC 222)

Biographical Note

The Buena Vista General Store was owned by the Charles M. Clements Sr. (April 24, 1876-January, 1952) and later by his son, Charles M. Clements Jr. (October 7, 1913-1972). The store was one of several properties and businesses run by the family, which included farmland, the funeral home in Buena Vista, Georgia and investment property in Florida and elsewhere, as well as involvement by both father and son with the Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank and the First Baptist Church. The store was sold in 1991 by Charles Clement III, according to Rena S. Cobb's A History of Marion County, Georgia.

Scope and Content

These records give a very detailed account of the daily activities of a rural general store from the turn of the century through World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II and the peace-time boom that followed. In addition to the store records, there are documents relating to the effects of the rationing system during World War II, both for retail establishments and private farming activities.
