Workshops
All State Art Symposium Friday March 1st – Morning Workshops
Metal Fabrication: Welcome to our Metal Fabrication Workshop! Dive into the world of metalworking with a hands-on session covering basic welding, grinding, and metal bending techniques. Collaborate in groups to craft small metal sculptures, fostering teamwork and creativity. Safety first—participants require close-toed, non-flammable leather shoes, long nonflammable jeans, and hair tied back with a rubber band for an engaging and secure experience. Let's shape metal and ideas together!(16)
Form and Figure: will explore how form and figure functions in space using a figure, tape, saran wrap, and scissors. Form is one of the seven elements of art and connotes a three-dimensional object in space. You will work collaboratively with one or two people in this project. The objective is to create a form using the figure in 2 hours. The outcome should show an understanding of several elements of 3-dimensional design. (24)
Getting dirty on the wheel: This hands-on workshop introduces students to basic wheel-throwing techniques, such as centering and throwing cylinders and bowls. Students will learn to throw various forms. No previous experience with clay is required. (14)
Pressure Printing: Pressure printing is a distinctive method of creating monoprint images by applying varied degrees of pressure from beneath the backing sheet. This technique allows students to experiment with various materials such as tape, paper, fabric, lace, or any material with low-relief texture to produce unique textures and patterns. By utilizing a combination of pressure printing techniques, students can create their own original visual designs. (15)
Travel poster: Design a travel poster for a destination of your choice. Explore and gather information about a country or location that intrigues you, then create an illustration featuring a prominent symbol or landmark associated with that place. Blend captivating text with your artwork to produce an enticing and visually appealing travel poster. (12)
Pinhole Camera: In this workshop we will travel through the history of photography by making and using pinhole cameras. A pinhole camera is a light tight box (often with a literal pin hole for a lens) that creates imperfect, but beautiful images. We will make cameras to shoot silver gelatin negatives around campus and then print positives in the darkroom. We will provide basic materials to build your camera. However, if you're interested you can bring in small boxes or containers that you want to turn into a camera. (12)
Abstract Drawing: Art and Music exploring drawing techniques developed by Kandinsky and the composer Stravinsky. (24)
Drawing with Conté Crayons: Work in one of the mediums favored by French Impressionist Edgar Degas, Conté Crayons on toned paper. The subject will be a plaster figurative still life. (14)
How to Watch Movie: Sometimes we go to a movie theatre, sometimes we settle in on the couch with some friends and some popcorn, sometimes we stare into our phones. However you watch your movies, this workshop will teach you some basic filmmaking techniques and cinema history to maximize your fun when you watch a movie. (40)
Narrative Corpse Comics Making workshop. (14)
Cardboard Relief Sculpture: Architecture (20)
Two-dimensional needle felting - Set to recreate 1 of 2 prompted world renowned artworks in the field of fiber art (20)
Collage Mosaic - The students will be placed in groups of 2. They will have one large posterboard to use for each mosaic, and the students will have to use tissue paper and magazines to re-create a famous painting. (20)
Crazy about Cyanotypes! -The students will learn about cyanotypes and how they work. The students will work individually to create their own cyanotype. The students will use found objects in nature to create the pieces of art. (20)
Collage Pop art inspired poster - The students will be required to make a 11x14 poster using various colored paper/ vinyl. (20)
