College of Letters and Sciences

With the growing need for experts in these fields, the College of Letters and Sciences grows every year with new students, new faculty, and new programs.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Initiative

CSU is a recipient of one of the University System of Georgia's STEM IV Initiative awards to recruit, progress and graduate students from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs by building and supporting a vibrant learning community. This will be achieved through the following:

  • Thinking Like a Scientist Course. The community formation starts with this course (PERS 1506), a 1-credit-hour course that introduces students to support services available, effective study skills, and scientific literacy. Students in the class design and present their solutions for recruiting and progressing students successfully through STEM programs at CSU. The course can be applied as an Area B seminar and it fulfills the First Year Experience requirement.
  • STEM Career Videos. These videos feature interviews with CSU STEM alumni, who discuss their own experiences working in their field, how to prepare, and what they like most about their career.
  • Peer Mentors. CSU students are trained to serve as peer mentors for students in the learning community.
  • Social Events. Periodic social events help cement the sense of belonging for students in our STEM learning community.
  • Participation in STEM Clubs and Outreach. Members of our learning community are encouraged to help grow the community by getting involved in disciplinary clubs and outreach efforts (such as science fair, Science Olympiad, math contests, and robotics competitions).
  • Involvement in Undergraduate Research. Members of our learning community get encouragement and support to participate in research projects.
