Marcus Denard Johnson, Assistant Professor of Theatre, hails from Atlanta, Georgia
and comes to Columbus State University by way of New York City. Marcus received his
Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Stage Performance from Morehouse College
in Atlanta, Georgia. He then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting,
with departmental distinction, from the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory
for Actor Training. After performing on stages and theatre festivals across New York
City, Marcus decided to pursue his interest in teaching. He was accepted into an inaugural,
specialized cohort of the New York City Teaching Fellowship, earning a Master of Science
in Adolescent Special Education from Hunter College. Marcus would go on to teach in
the New York City Department of Education for 3 years before transitioning to a 7
year career in Theatre Education and Administration within the arts non-profit sector
of New York City. During his time working with nonprofits, Marcus was guided by his
passion for social justice to engage educators and artists in conversations regarding
equity and anti-oppressive practices through the lens of theatre. Marcus is excited
to bring his wealth of experience to the Theatre Department at Columbus State University,
and to return to his home state with his wife and infant daughter.
