PAWS Humane's mission is to prevent overpopulation and suffering of companion animals, to teach kindness and responsibility toward them and to promote the remarkable capacity of pets to enrich human lives through pet-assisted therapy programs. We have an adoption center, spay/neuter clinic, and education center at the Animal Resource Center located on Milgen Road.

Job Description

PAWS Humane provides volunteers with a wide variety of opportunities. Volunteers can assist with dog walking, socializing, off-site adoption events, humane education presentations, marketing, public relations, and more. Volunteers can help with as many or as few volunteer roles as they would like and are not limited to the existing volunteer opportunities.

In-Room Socializing: Many of our shelter animals may not have had the best experiences with people and do not know the meaning of true affection. Volunteers play an essential role in giving all of our shelter pets a good experience with people, instilling in them that people are not here to harm them, but to provide love and care. A well-socialized animal is happy, which makes them more approachable and makes the transition into a new home much easier on the adopter and pet. Let an animal fall asleep in your lap and soak up some of the love these shelter pets have to offer!

Dog Walkers: Many of our dogs are housebroken or are in the process of becoming housebroken. Dog walkers ensure these animals get outside, so they don't have an accident inside which causes them anxiety. The exercise that walks provide is crucial to decreasing anxiety as well. Beautiful wooded trails are on-site for daily walks.

Facility Cleaning: As you can imagine, much cleaning is needed here at PAWS first thing every morning! Our Animal Care Techs arrive at 7am every day to heavily clean the adoptions and pre-adoptions kennels. Anything from scrubbing floors to changing litter is tackled during this time. It is advisable that volunteers wear long pants and rubber boots if possible.

Photography Assistants: A good photo makes all the difference in getting potential adopters through our doors. Volunteers are needed to assist professional photographers who graciously donate their time to photograph our shelter pets. Tasks such as prop set up, animal handling and posing, and equipment breakdown are just a sampling of what photography assistants can provide.

Requirements

Volunteers for Paws Humane Society must be at least 18 years of age, attend a Volunteer Orientation and purchase a volunteer t-shirt ($10.80). Registration information and dates can be found on our website at www.pawshumane.org/get-involved/volunteers/.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)
For the past 17 years, Goodwill of the Southern Rivers provides no-cost tax preparation services to the community through a partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The program, known as VITA, recruits and trains volunteers to prepare free tax returns for households that earn less than $60,000 annually. In addition to tax preparation services, the Financial Services Department also offers no-cost financial workshops and class through community resources.

Job Description

Various Roles Provided at a VITA site:

Greeter/Screener – You greet everyone visiting the site to create a pleasant atmosphere. You screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirm they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns. Tax law certification is not required for this position.

Interpreter – You provide free language interpreter services to customers who are not fluent in English. Basic tax knowledge is helpful, but it is not required for this position.

Site Administrator/Coordinator – You have excellent organizational and leadership skills. You are the primary resource for sharing your knowledge of the program and are available to assist with any issues that may arise. You develop and maintain schedules for all volunteers to ensure adequate coverage, supplies and equipment at your site. Tax law certification is not always required for this position.

Tax Preparer – You complete and successfully certify in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers.

Quality Reviewer – You review tax returns completed by volunteer tax preparers, ensuring that every taxpayer receives top quality service and that the tax returns are error-free. You must be tax law certified at least at the Intermediate level.

Tax Coach – You provide tax law assistance and guide taxpayers in preparing their own tax returns. Tax law certification is required for this volunteer role and training is available on-line or through face-to-face instruction.

To provide emergency shelter, crisis interventions, security, and advocacy to victims of domestic violence and their children in a seven-county area.

Service

We have many opportunities for students to develop programs with the women and / or the children. Job needs vary from day to day - Some of these include:

Job Description

Ronald McDonald House Charities Volunteers help provide families at the Ronald McDonald House and the RMHC Family Room with a pleasant and comfortable environment by assisting staff with daily operations of the house and by providing support to the families as needed. Meals from the Heart Volunteers come together in the kitchen and provide a meal for the families, cooking, eating with families (when families are in house) and cleaning and storing the meal.

Volunteers assist with answering House phone, check-in/check out of guests, house tours and input of donor names to computer. Assist with bulk mailings and official correspondence, acknowledge contributions of cash and gifts to the House. Additional daily operational tasks include replenishing guest rooms, checking laundry, tidying up the kitchen and fundraising preparation.

Chattahoochee CASA strives to improve the lives of abused and neglected children and their families by ensuring that the court has adequate information to make sensitive decisions and court orders promoting the health, safety, and well-being of each child.

Job Description

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are everyday heroes speaking up for the best interest of children in foster care. CASA volunteers are trained, sworn in by the judge, and appointed to a child in foster care. The CASA volunteers then meet with the child monthly, building a relationship with them, while also gathering information about their case and well- being. CASA volunteers then go to court and advocate for the child's best interest. CASA volunteers are the one consistent person in a child's life and walk alongside that child throughout their foster care journey until they reach permanency.

Requirements

There are some national requirements for CASA volunteers. These include but are not limited to:

• Advocate for the well-being of children
• At least 21 years of age
• Pass criminal background checks
• Good verbal & written communication skills
• Ability to be objective & nonjudgmental
• Available to attend court hearings
• Commitment to CASA program for at least 18 months or until case is resolved.

This is not your traditional volunteer opportunity. There is a mandatory 30-hour training then it is 5-10 hours a month until the case is resolved.

Job Description

Brand Ambassador - A Volunteer opportunity to help assist the Office of Recruitment with on campus events such as Discovery Days and Daily Campus Tours The ideal Brand Ambassador volunteer will be someone that is excited to represent Columbus State University and their program. These volunteers will need to be outgoing, dependable, and able to relate to prospective students and their families. As a Brand Ambassador Volunteer, they will need to be available for Discovery Days (Feb 10 & March 2). Volunteers will have training on campus tours and speaking with prospective students and families.

Daily Campus Tours are hosted Monday-Friday at 10 am on Main Campus and 1:30 pm on RiverPark Campus. The Main Campus tour volunteer will need to be available from 10 am to 12 pm and the RiverPark tour volunteer will need to be available from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. During Daily tours, the volunteer will be responsible for providing prospective students and their families with a tour of the campus and provide information on student life and other CSU information. We also host a RiverPark tour one Saturday a month from 11 am to 12:30 pm. The tour times are not flexible and will require the volunteer to be there the duration of the tour.

Discovery Days will be hosted on Saturdays throughout both Spring and Fall semesters. When working these events, duties will entail welcoming prospective students and their guests along with providing campus tours of both Main Campus and RiverPark. Throughout the day the volunteers will be a group of prospective students that are interested in the same major they are currently in. Pairing current students with prospectives of the same major, the conversation about what to expect and the experiences will come naturally to all and make for a connection between current and prospective student.

There are no set requirements, but we do ask that the volunteer commits to a whole semester.

The Brown Bag is a nonprofit agency, which provides groceries to low-income elderly individuals in our community. The program is manned 100% by volunteers. Presently, over 350 elderly are helped each month in Columbus. Our sites are set-up like a small grocery store where the members can make their own selections of the items they get at no cost to them. The site is manned by volunteers who do greeting, registration, shopping, bagging, carry bags for those who can't, and just show each of them that people do care about them. Volunteers also send out birthday cards, make home deliveries to homebound individuals, provide pickup trucks and manpower on the days we stock the site. At Thanksgiving, we give each member a whole chicken, to go along with the bag of groceries, and for Christmas we have a Get-Together, which for many is the only holiday activity they have.

Construction Site - offers volunteer opportunities for you to help with all aspects of home building. We have both construction and non-construction volunteer opportunities available to you. You do not need to be an expert in construction to help out on a work site. On-site construction work is the most popular of Habitat’s volunteer opportunities. We make every effort to incorporate all willing volunteers regardless of skill level.

Volunteers work on nearly every facet of home construction, helping with dozens of tasks ranging from framing to painting and landscaping. Volunteers may bring their own work gloves and tools, but please mark your name on them and remember to take them home with you. We do have gloves and tools onsite. 

ReStore tasks and responsibilities may vary based on available projects during your registered volunteer shift and on your interests. Potential tasks include:

Program Information

Open Door Community House, Inc. has been opening doors of faith, hope and opportunity since 1935. Through various ministries and programs, we serve persons who are of low-income or who are homeless. Below are the current ministries and volunteer opportunities offered through Open Door.

Children and Youth Program: serves ages 5-18 during the school year and ages 5-12 during the full-day Summer Academy program. Volunteers may assist with arts and crafts, dance, music, drama, games, sports, tutoring, or serving food in Kids' Café.

Circles: A program for persons living in poverty to create and implement a personal plan out of poverty. In a group format, individuals learn empowering ways to move beyond their current circumstances.

Senior Adult Program: meets each Monday at 2 p.m. for lunch and a program ranging from bingo to line dancing. Volunteers may assist with food preparation and serving, provide a program, or be a greeter helping all senior adults feel welcome.

Showering Program for the Homeless: operates each weekday morning from 8-11 a.m. The program offers women and men living on the streets a warm shower, breakfast, a clean change of clothing, haircut, access to a clothes washer and dryer, and assistance with computer help and job search. Volunteers may register participants, distribute hygiene items, cook and/or distribute breakfast or wash clothes.

Other ministries of Open Door may utilize volunteers on special occasions. These include: the Transition Home for Women in Crisis, a 12-bed facility for homeless women; Community Case Management for Homeless Women, providing supportive services to homeless women and children in all shelters in the Columbus area; Chaplaincy, providing basic needs assistance and counseling to all persons in need; Family Support Services, providing group-based curriculum to help low-income persons move beyond poverty to become economically self-sufficient; and the "Open Door Institute," a culinary arts and life skills training program.

Children enrolled in the Muscogee County School District may be referred to the program. Referrals are made based on parental request or teacher's observation of need and requires the approval of the principal, assistant principal or guidance counselor. Children may visit the Clothing Bank twice a year, once in the Fall/Winter and once in the Spring/Summer. During each visit, children receive new socks, new undergarments, new athletic shoes, and an assortment of gently used items, including a winter coat. The mission of the Sara Spano Clothing Bank is to enhance self esteem and promote a positive self-image of disadvantaged children int he Muscogee County School System by providing them with a school wardrobe consisting of new and gently worn items.

At the southern end of the Columbus Riverwalk, the Center offers a view of the ecoregion of West Central Georgia and the Chattahoochee Valley and provides access to samples of the area's rich communities of plants and animals. Opened in 1995 as a collaboration among Columbus Water Works, Columbus State University, and the City of Columbus, the Center provides exhibits, displays and nature trails, and also offers formal and informal programs about the ecology and natural history of the region. Interpretive and hands-on programming is provided by Columbus State University professional staff, contributing faculty, student assistants, and volunteers.

Job Description

1. Usher = Our ushers are essential to the Patron Experience. As an usher, you Greet our patrons as they enter the building and direct the patrons to the Saloon, restrooms, and their assigned seats in the main stage theater. Ushers also mingle with the Patrons before the performance starts and during intermission, and patrons may ask you to take a picture of them in front of our backdrop or Christmas Tree. Our ushers must wear either a solid black dress with a solid black jacket or long sleeve sweater and solid black shoes, or a solid black skirt or solid black pants with a solid white button-up shirt and the black shoes and jacket or sweater.  
   We provide an usher name tag and neck or bowtie to wear while here.  
    
2. Docent = Our Docents take patrons on a guided tour throughout the building. Attire for docents is Business Casual. Tours last about an hour and will be on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. 
3. Crew = The crew volunteers do many different things and must commit to being here for every performance of the play they are crew for. Below are the types of crew jobs.
   • Run Crew
     
     • Moves scenery, sets and strikes furniture, etc.
     • Requires ability to move, lift, carry, etc.
     • On their feet for the majority of the show.
        Most shows need 5-15 Run Crew and must be 15+.
   • Spot Opt
     • Operate a spotlight from the 2nd-floor balcony.
     • Must be okay with heights.
     • Able to sit on a stool for this job.
     • Most shows need 2 Spot Opts and must be 15+.
   • Fly Crew
     • Pulls ropes on the fly rail to fly in and out scenic pieces.
     • Must have decent upper body strength in order to pull heavier pieces.
     • On feet the majority of the show.
     • Only needed on Mainstage shows, typically need 2-4 and must be 18+
   • Dresser
     • Assist actors with costume changes.
     • Must be able to move quickly.
     • On feet the majority of the show.

   • Board Op
     • Run Lights, sound, or projections by pressing “GO” when the stage manager calls a cue.

Community Mentoring

Job Description:

This is the core BBBS program that matches children ages 6-13 from primarily single-parent homes with thoroughly screened, responsible, caring adult volunteer mentors. The primary goal of this program is relationship development that will lead children that will have improved self-confidence, raised academic achievement and strengthened community and family relationships. The volunteer is asked to commit to spending four - eight hours per month for at least one year with the child. The match can spend time together in a variety of ways out in the community, such as; playing board games, working on homework, going to a ballgame, doing arts and crafts, visiting museums, biking, etc. Most importantly the volunteer is available to their "Little" to share their feelings, talking through problems and celebrating accomplishments.
