Concepts of Fitness (1-2-2) This course is designed to help students understand the role of fitness, diet, and stress in wellness; to implement a safe and effective personal fitness program; and to provide a structured opportunity to enhance personal fitness
PELM 2105. Weight Control (2-0-2) Exploration of body composition, personal dietary practices, skills for dietary planning, a survey of eating disorders, commercially prepared food products, and commercially available diets.
PELM 2205. Introduction to Physical Education and Recreation (2-2-3) Exploration of the historical and philosophical foundations of physical education, recreation, and sport with emphasis on gaining an understanding of the profession and relevant issues.
PELM 2206. Recreation Program Design (3-0-3) Planning, implementing, and evaluating programs in leisure services.
PELM 2345. Emergency Care and First Aid (0-2-1) Knowledge and skills necessary to respond to common medical emergencies, and to identify preventive measures.
PELM 3125. Managing and Directing Recreation Programs (2-2-3) Leadership skills necessary for organizing and implementing leisure service programs. Laboratory experiences will be included.
PELM 3135. Kinesiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2221. Analysis of movement from an anatomical and biomechanical perspective. Major emphasis on anatomical kinesiology - origins, insertions, nomenclature, actions of skeletal muscle. Biomechanical analysis of movement and sport skills.
PELM 3216. Teaching Dance (0-2-1) Preparation to teach a variety of dance forms in grades P-12. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 3217. Physical Education in the Elementary School (1-4-3) Prerequisite: EDUF 2216; Admission to teacher education. The content and methods of teaching physical education in the elementary school; emphasis on movement education games curriculum. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 3225. Outdoor Resources in Recreation (2-2-3) Use of outdoor resources in planning and implementing adventure and outdoor education programs. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 3226. Facility Development in Parks and Recreation (1-4-3) Prerequisites: PELM 2205 and PELM 3125. Trends in facility development, design, and construction of recreation and park facilities. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 3235. Basic Principles of Athletic Training (2-2-3) Introduction to the role of athletic trainers in sport, professional relationships with other disciplines, principles of sport fitness, administration of the athletic training programs, and prevention, recognition, understanding, and management of athletic injuries.
PELM 3255. Coaching and Officiating Baseball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate baseball.
PELM 3256. Coaching and Officiating Basketball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate basketball.
PELM 3257. Coaching and Officiating Softball (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate softball.
PELM 3258. Coaching and Officiating Football (1-2-2) Preparation of students to coach and/or officiate football.
PELM 3310. Physical Education in the Elementary School Lab (0-2-1) Prerequisite: Health and Physical Education major; Co-requisite: PELM 3217. Physical education laboratory experience in a P-5 setting; planning, teaching, and evaluation of lessons.
PELM 3365. Coaching Youth Sports (0-2-1) Planning, organizing, and coaching youth sports. Additional fee required.
PELM 3425. Practicum in Recreation and Parks (0-10-3) Supervised experience in approved recreation settings. A minimum of 150 lab hours will be required with related seminars and group planning sessions. (S/U grading.)
PELM 4131. Basic Exercise Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2221; Co-requisite: PELM 4331. Physiological responses to muscular activity are studied with emphasis given to bioenergetics, cardiorespiratory function, thermoregulation and conditioning
PELM 4132. Clinical Exercise Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: PELM 4131. Materials and methods for risk assessment, fitness evaluation and exercise prescription. ACSM certification guidelines emphasized.
PELM 4135. Exercise Risk Identification (3-0-3) BIOL 2222. Emphasizes the natural history of atherosclerosis, historical and current status of coronary heart disease risk factors, related and unrelated exercise risks, amelioration and avoidance of risk in a fitness setting, and consideration of compliance to exercise programs.
PELM 4137. Nutritional Bases of Human Performance (3-0-3) Prerequisite: HESC 3115 or departmental approval; Co-requisite: PELM 4337. An examination of digestive/absorptive processes, energy and nutrient requirements for health and performance, dietary fads among athletes, the relationship of sport and exercise to eating disorders, and related topics.
PELM 4146. Testing, Measurement, and Evaluation in PELM (3-0-3) Essentials of measurement and evaluation with discussion of measurement scales, principles of measurement and evaluation, descriptive statistics, test construction, and grading.
PELM 4149. Emergency Care Instructor Training (2-0-2) Prerequisite: PELM 2345. Knowledge, skills, and teaching expertise to achieve selected national instructor level certifications and to function as an emergency care instructor.
PELM 4215. Physical Education at the Middle Level (2-4-4) Prerequisites: PELM 3217 and Admission to Teacher Education program. Introduction to the components of a quality M.S. P.E. program; young adolescent characteristics, middle level concept, and implications for teaching and curriculum. Emphasis on designing a developmentally appropriate program.
PELM 4216. Physical Education in the Secondary School (2-4-4) Prerequisites: PELM 3217 and Admission to Teacher Education program. Curriculum development and methods of teaching physical education in the secondary school. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 4217. Health Related Fitness Education (1-2-2) Prerequisite: PELM 4131. Designed to prepare pre-service teachers to guide individuals in the process of becoming physically active for a lifetime. Experience observing, teaching, and assessing student wellness in elementary and secondary schools; emphasis on developing personal fitness.
PELM 4225. Administration of Leisure Services (2-2-3) Prerequisites: PELM 2205 and PELM 3125. Administration of recreation and park services provided by municipal, district, and county agencies including legal provisions, analysis of internal organizational patterns, and relationships with media.
PELM 4226. Grant Applications in Parks and Recreation (1-4-3) Prerequisites: PELM 2205 and PELM 3125. Research proposals and applications in the grant process.
PELM 4227. Commercial Recreation and Tourism (1-4-3) Prerequisites: PELM 2205 and PELM 3125. Planning, organization and administration of commercial recreation and tourism including theories and practices of state and regional tourism agencies. Laboratory experience required.
PELM 4245. Physical Activity for Students with Disabilities (1-2-2) Prerequisite: SPED 3255. Program development, teaching techniques, and activity adaptations for special populations.
PELM 4285. Recognition and Evaluation of Athletic Injuries (4-1-3) Prerequisites: PELM 3235 and BIOL 2222. Signs and symptoms of common athletic injuries including how to recognize, evaluate, and care for injuries.
PELM 4286. Advanced Techniques in Athletic Training (2-2-3) Prerequisite: PELM 4285. In-depth study of the techniques involved in the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
PELM 4331. Basic Exercise Physiology Lab (0-2-1) Co-requisite: PELM 4131. Laboratory experiences designed to reinforce lecture in PELM 4131.
PELM 4337. Nutritional Bases of Human Performance Lab (0-2-1) Co-requisite: PELM 4137. Laboratory experience utilizing current software for dietary analysis and planning for apparently health adults.
PELM 4415. Coaching Practicum (0-4-2) Supervised experiences in approved coaching settings. A minimum of 60 lab hours to be required with related seminars and group planning sessions. S/U grading.
PELM 4416. Teaching Practicum in Physical Education (0-4-2) Prerequisite: PELM 3217. Designed to provide students with opportunities to observe and teach P-12 students in the public schools; emphasis on reflective teaching. (S/U grading.)
PELM 4485. Student Teaching in Health and Physical Education (0-40-10) Prerequisites: PELM 3217, PELM 4215, or PELM 4216 and admission to Teacher Education. Observation and instruction in health and physical education. Cooperative supervision by selected P-12 teachers and college faculty. (S/U grading.)
PELM 4698. Internship (0-40-12) Prerequisites: Senior standing and prior departmental approval. Supervised experiences in approved agencies for students majoring in Exercise Science and Recreation and Park Administration. Application process must be completed prior to registration. (S/U grading.)
PELM 5115. The Development of Motor Skills: A Lifespan Perspective (3-0-3) Prerequisite: EDUF 2216. Examines developmental changes that occur in the acquisition of fundamental locomotor and manipulative skills; factors affecting development: information processing differences between children and adults and beginning and skilled performers.
PELM 5116. Physical Education and Athletic Administration (3-0-3) Organization and administration of physical education, athletics and related programs.
PELM 5135. Program Design in Exercise Science (3-0-3) Planning, implementing and evaluating programs in exercise science.
PELM 5545. Selected Topics in Physical Education and Leisure Management (1-3 hours) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Selected topics in exercise science, health and physical education, or recreation and park administration. May be taken twice for credit.
PELM 5795. Seminar in Physical Education (1-0-1) Prerequisite: Junior standing. A focused study of issues affecting physical education. Topics may vary between offerings. May be repeated.
PELM 5899. Independent Study (1-3 hours) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. An individual research project approved in advance by the instructor and department chair. May be taken twice for credit.
PELM 6115. Curriculum Development in Physical Education (3-0-3) Study of innovative curricula aimed at developing a Aphysically educated person@. Examines curricular models, issues and trends, scope and sequence, outcomes, and assessment.
PELM 6116. Analysis of Teaching Behavior in Physical Education (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Previous teaching experience at the P-12 or college level. Techniques and instruments for identifying and evaluating teaching behaviors with emphasis on research findings and their application to physical education.
PELM 6117. Social Development in Physical Education: Working with At-Risk Students (3-0-3) Prepares teachers to work with students who are considered at-risk, especially those at risk for dropping out or becoming involved with drugs, gangs or violence. Emphasis on developing a social responsibility plan for physical education.
PELM 6118. Legal Issues in Physical Education and Sports (3-0-3) Designed to develop knowledge of liability and safety issues in physical education and athletics in P-12 programs.
PELM 6119. Assessment in Physical Education (3-0-3) Focused study on the role of assessment and evaluation. Emphasis on practical application of student assessment based on realistic outcomes.
PELM 6135. Designing Fitness Programs for Children and Youth (2-0-2) In-depth understanding of the parameters that define and affect fitness and conditioning with emphasis on the application of research finding to the design of programs in P-12 settings.
PELM 6136. Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors: Effects of Exercise (3-0-3) An examination of the natural history of atherosclerosis, associated risk factors, and the effects of exercise and other intervention programs.
PELM 6137. Introduction to Exercise Electrocardiography (5-0-5) An examination of the electrophysiology of the heart, the electrocardiogram, identification of normal and abnormal rhythms at rest and exercise, and 12-lead infarct patterns.
PELM 6138. Cardiovascular and Respiratory Pharmacology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: PELM 6235. An examination of receptor function and drug therapy in cardiac and smooth muscle, with specific reference to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
PELM 6215. Physical Education for Children (2-2-3) Theories upon which traditional and contemporary programs for children in grades P-5 are based; current research and relationships between theory and practice. Team teaching experience.
PELM 6216. Middle Level Physical Education (2-2-3) Introduces current research in middle level education and provides a forum for discussing the components of a quality middle level physical education program. Practical application of research emphasized throughout the course.
PELM 6217. Physical Education in the Secondary School (2-2-3) Provides the student with theoretical and research-based knowledge in physical education and the opportunity to improve physical education teaching skills; team teaching experiences with a college teacher or a master teacher from the high school.
PELM 6218. Research Technology in Exercise Science (4-2-5) Prerequisite: Introductory course in statistics recommended. An introduction to technologies and methodologies in Exercise Science research.
PELM 6219. Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (1-2-2) Planning, implementing, and evaluating physical education programs for students with disabilities.
PELM 6225. Leisure Services Management (1-4-3) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Current practices, techniques and concepts in leisure management.
PELM 6226. Funding and Grants (1-4-3) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Identification and acquisition of grants, foundation monies, and related resources.
PELM 6235. Advanced Exercise Physiology (4-2-5) Prerequisites: Departmental approval. An examination of muscular and cardiopulmonary responses to exercise training, and human variability in health and disease.
PELM 6236. Programs in Adult Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation (4-2-5) Prerequisite: PELM 6235. An examination of programs, guidelines, safety, motivation and supervision of exercise programs for healthy and clinical populations.
PELM 6275. Movement Education in Early Childhood (2-2-3) Content and instructional procedures for teaching physical education to young children; emphasis on movement education conceptual framework, developmentally appropriate equipment and practices, and current literature in the field.
PELM 6435. Practicum in Cardiac Rehabilitation (0-20-9) Prerequisites: Current CPR certification and professional liability insurance. A minimum of 300 hours in an on-going clinical cardiac rehabilitation setting. (S/U grading.)
PELM 6515. Selected Topics in Physical Education (2-0-2) Formal class study of selected topics relevant to the teaching of physical education, e.g. Physical Education for Preschool Children; Current Professional Literature, and Issues in Motor Development.
PELM 6795. Contemporary Issues in Physical Education (2-0-2) Addresses professional issues and trends that affect physical educators; analysis of contemporary policy, practice, research, and theory applied to the teaching of physical education.
PELM 6899. Independent Study (1-3 hours) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Intensive study in an area of special interest in physical education approved in advance by the advisor.
