Department of Military Science
Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC)
The university, in conjunction with the U.S. Army, maintains a Department of Military Science for those students who elect to combine military leadership and managerial training with a traditional academic program. The mission of the ROTC is to commission the future officer leadership of the United States Army. Through ROTC, a student can earn a commission as a second lieutenant in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. Upon completing ROTC, students are commissioned as officers in the United States Army. The Department of Military Science is staffed by active duty officers and noncommissioned officers. The military science curriculum, 32 semester hours, is divided into the basic course (freshman-sophomore) and the advanced course (junior-senior). The basic course is open to all full-time students, male and female, enrolled in a four-year baccalaureate degree program or two-year graduate program. While the advanced course is open to all students, students who are not contracted cadets may audit classes only. Textbooks and other required course materials are furnished at no charge.
Basic Course — This program includes six semester hours in leadership and general military subjects which qualify students for the advanced course. Required military science courses are ROTC 1215, 1216, 2225, 2226. Students may be exempted from the basic course if they are veterans, members of National Guard or Reserve units, or in other instances as approved by the professor of military science. For students who are academic juniors or beginning graduate school and desire to enter the advanced course, but have not completed the basic course, optional ways to fulfill the basic course requirement are available. Students do not incur any military obligation as a result of enrolling in the basic course.
Advanced Course — This program includes 15 semester hours in military science and advanced camp. Required courses are ROTC 3231, 3232, 3415, 4245, and 4795. Courses include training in leadership, management, and advanced military subjects. Advanced course students are contracted and paid $150 per month, for 10 months during both their junior and senior years. Cadets must attend an advanced camp for five weeks at a major army installation between their junior and senior years. ROTC cadets are paid approximately $700 while attending advanced camp. Transportation, housing, meals, medical care, etc. while at advanced camp are furnished by the Army.
Cadet Professional Development Training — The Military Science Department offers additional courses to enhance student leadership development and growth. Courses include a staff ride/study of a historic battlefield and physical training as well as the opportunity to attend confidence training such as airborne or air assault.
Professional Military Education — In addition to basic and advanced course ROTC, cadets must complete professional military education requirements consisting of one course in each of the following areas: written communication skills, human behavior, military history, computer literacy, and math reasoning. Students should consult with the professor of military science to determine those university courses suitable for fulfilling these requirements.
