Academics

Abbott Turner College of Business

Supporting the university’s statement of purpose, the mission of the Abbott Turner College of Business (ATCOB) is to provide a quality educational experience in the field of business administration to both traditional and non-traditional students. Men and women at any stage in their careers should be prepared to meet the challenges of today’s rapidly changing environment and make significant contributions to their profession. Through our undergraduate and graduate programs, and in conjunction with Columbus State University’s liberal arts orientation, we seek to instill a passion for life-long learning, promote an awareness of cultural diversity, and develop the problem-solving skills necessary for successful careers in business. We seek to serve our business community by providing accomplished graduates, offering educational opportunities, and conducting applied research. A strong component in this mission is in collaborative relations with the businesses themselves. It is critical that partnerships be maintained between the faculty and business practitioners, through continuous dialogue about developments in their respective areas of knowledge, questioning each other’s methodologies and practices, and ultimately, learning from each other. The mission is pursued with high-quality programs. At the undergraduate level, the mission emphasizes three distinct components of the degree program: a firm base in liberal arts, a central core of business knowledge which focuses on contemporary academic thought and practices, and an area of business specialization. The major areas of specialization are accounting, computer information systems, finance, management, and marketing. Students who wish to pursue a broad course of study may select business administration as a major area.

In pursuit of this mission, special ATCOB emphases are placed upon:

  • practical, high-quality programs based on a solid foundation in the traditional functional areas of business that meet service area needs but recognize the international dimension of business in an increasingly interdependent world
  • awareness of cultural diversity
  • analytical skills requiring critical thinking using inductive and deductive reasoning processes
  • communication skills through classroom writing and speaking assignments computer skills leading to proficiency in using applications software and understanding the role of information systems within the organization
  • active pursuit of collaborative relationships with local business focusing on the definition of needs and the development of internships which provide students with relevant business experience

General BBA Degree Program Notes

Minors

Students may take additional courses to achieve a minor concentration in a field outside of their major. (See the Undergraduate Minors section of this catalog.) Courses applied to a minor must be in addition to the BBA core and major core course requirements.

University System Business Transfer Credit

The following courses satisfy the Area F business core for University System of Georgia transfer credit to other member institutions:

  • ACCT 2101 and ACCT 2102, Principles of Accounting 1 & 2
  • BUSA 2106, The Environment of Business
  • CISM 2105, Introduction to Computer Information Systems
  • ECON 2105 and ECON 2106, Principles of Economics 1 & 2

Transfer Students

The specific credit for work done at other institutions that will apply toward the BBA is determined by the dean of the Abbott Turner College of Business. Transfer students should have credits evaluated by the dean to determine which credits will be accepted for the BBA. Allowance of transfer credit by the director of admissions does not mean that all credit will be accepted toward a BBA degree. At least one-half of the 69 business credit hours required for the BBA must be earned in the ATCOB.

Students Holding a Baccalaureate Degree

Students who wish to work towards a BBA degree and have previously earned a bachelor’s degree in a non-business discipline should contact the dean’s office to determine individual requirements.

The Abbott Turner College of Business is located in Jordan Hall. The dean’s office is located in room 332; the associate dean is located in room 302; and the assistant dean is located in room 330.
