EXSC 2105. Weight Control (2-0-2) Exploration of body composition, personal dietary practices, skills for dietary planning, a survey of eating disorders, commercially prepared food products, and commercially available diets.
EXSC 2135. Functional Human Anatomy (3-0-3) Analysis of human movement from an anatomical and biomechanical perspective. Major emphasis on anatomical kinesiology; origins, insertions, nomenclature, and actions of skeletal muscle. Biomechanical analysis of work, movement, and sports skills.
EXSC 3135. Kinesiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2221 or BIOL 1216. Analysis of movement from an anatomical and biomechanical perspective. Major emphasis on anatomical kinesiology - origins, insertions, nomenclature, actions of skeletal muscle. Biomechanical analysis of movement and sport skills.
EXSC 3235. Basic Principles of Athletic Training (2-2-3) Introduction to the role of athletic trainers in sport, professional relationships with other disciplines, principles of sport fitness, administration of the athletic training programs, and prevention, recognition, understanding, and management of athletic injuries.
EXSC 4131. Basic Exercise Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2221 or BIOL 1216. Physiological responses to muscular activity are studied with emphasis given to bioenergetics, cardiorespiratory function, thermoregulation and conditioning
EXSC 4132. Clinical Exercise Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: EXSC 4131. Materials and methods for risk assessment, fitness evaluation and exercise prescription. ACSM certification guidelines emphasized.
EXSC 4135. Exercise Risk Identification (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. Emphasizes the natural history of atherosclerosis, historical and current status of coronary heart disease risk factors, related and unrelated exercise risks, amelioration and avoidance of risk in a fitness setting, and consideration of compliance to exercise programs.
EXSC 4137. Nutritional Bases of Human Performance (3-0-3) Co-requisite: EXSC 4337. An examination of digestive/absorptive processes, energy and nutrient requirements for health and performance, dietary fads among athletes, the relationship of sport and exercise to eating disorders, and related topics.
EXSC 4146. Testing, Measurement, and Evaluation in EXSC (3-0-3) Essentials of measurement and evaluation with discussion of measurement scales, principles of measurement and evaluation, descriptive statistics, test construction, and grading.
EXSC 4285. Recognition and Evaluation of Athletic Injuries (4-1-3) Prerequisites: EXSC 3235 and BIOL 2222. Signs and symptoms of common athletic injuries including how to recognize, evaluate, and care for injuries.
EXSC 4286. Advanced Techniques in Athletic Training (2-2-3) Prerequisite: EXSC 4285. In-depth study of the techniques involved in the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
EXSC 4331. Basic Exercise Physiology Lab (0-2-1) Laboratory experiences designed to reinforce lecture in EXSC 4131. (Course fee required.)
EXSC 4337. Nutritional Bases of Human Performance Lab (0-2-1) Co-requisite: EXSC 4137. Laboratory experience utilizing current software for dietary analysis and planning for apparently health adults.
EXSC 4698. Internship (0-40-12) Prerequisites: Senior standing and prior departmental approval. Supervised experiences in approved agencies. Application process must be completed prior to registration. (S/U grading.)
EXSC 5135. Program Design in Exercise Science (3-0-3) Planning, implementing and evaluating programs in exercise science.
EXSC 5545. Selected Topics in Exercise Science (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Selected topics in exercise science. May be taken twice for credit.
EXSC 5899. Independent Study (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Individual research approved by instructor and department chair. May be taken twice for credit.
EXSC 6136. Identifying Exercise Risk (3-0-3) An examination of disease processes, environmental processes, legal and illegal drugs, and personal behaviors as exercise risk.
EXSC 6137. Introduction to Exercise Electrocardiography (5-0-5) An examination of the electrophysiology of the heart, the electrocardiogram, identification of normal and abnormal rhythms at rest and exercise, and 12-lead infarct patterns.
EXSC 6138. Cardiovascular and Respiratory Pharmacology (3-0-3) An examination of receptor function and drug therapy in cardiac and smooth muscle, with specific reference to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
EXSC 6218. Research Technology in Exercise Science (4-2-5) Prerequisite: Introductory course in statistics recommended. An introduction to technologies and methodologies in Exercise Science research.
EXSC 6235. Advanced Exercise Physiology (4-2-5) Prerequisites: Departmental approval. An examination of muscular and cardiopulmonary responses to exercise training, and human variability in health and disease.
EXSC 6236. Programs in Adult Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation (4-2-5) Prerequisite: EXSC 6235. An examination of programs, guidelines, safety, motivation and supervision of exercise programs for healthy and clinical populations.
EXSC 6435. Practicum in Cardiac Rehabilitation (0-20-9) Prerequisites: Current CPR certification and professional liability insurance. A minimum of 300 hours in a departmental approved clinical setting. (S/U grading.)
EXSC 6899. Independent Study (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Individual research approved in advance by instructor and department chair. May be taken twice for credit.
