MUSC - Music, General


MUSC 1000. Music Convocation (0-3-0)
A laboratory experience to include student recitals, guest performances, master classes, lectures, and meetings. May be repeated nine times for credit. Attendance by non-majors is encouraged. (S/U grading)

MUSC 1060. Jazz Ensemble Activities (0-5-1) This course includes Jazz Band and several Jazz Combos. The course is divided into sections by audition. Auditions are open to all CSU students. Emphasis is placed on written music and improvisation, using a variety of repertoire from historical and current composers. Admission by audition only.

MUSC 1070. Orchestral Ensemble Activities (0-5-1) Rehearsal and performance of orchestral and string ensemble literature. The course exists as a variety of ensembles: CSU Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and String Ensembles (of varying instrumentation: String Quartet, String Trio, etc.). Open to all students on an audition basis. The repertoire provides experience of a variety of musical styles. May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 1080. Wind Ensemble Activities (0-5-1) Rehearsal and performance of wind band and chamber wind literature. The course is divided by section into the CSU Wind Symphony and the CSU Wind Orchestra by audition process. Chamber wind groups are formed as literature demands within both large wind band ensembles. Open to all students on an audition basis. The repertoire is carefully selected to provide a variety of musical experiences from the traditional to the historical, to the cutting-edge of contemporary art and popular music. May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 1090. Vocal Ensemble Activities (0-5-1) Rehearsal and performance of choral and operatic ensemble literature. The course exists as a variety of ensembles: Chamber Singers (the premiere mixed ensemble, primarily but not limited to music majors), Women's Vocal Ensemble (primarily but not limited to music majors), Concert Chorale (primarily but not limited to music majors), Chorale (comprised of CSU students and members of the community from Columbus and the surrounding region), Choral Union (the combined ensembles), and other chamber vocal ensembles. Admittance to any and all choirs is based on successful completion of an individual vocal audition. May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 1100. Music Appreciation (3-0-3) The elements of music as revealed through study of Western art music, American vernacular music, and non-Western music. Consideration of the role of music and the musician in society, both past and present is covered.

MUSC 1205. Opera Workshop 1 (3-0-3)Prerequisite: Music majors only. A comprehensive survey and application of the basic skills needed for a successful career on the singing stage.

MUSC 1214. Theory 1 (1-1-1) Prerequisite: music major status or department permission. Review of the fundamentals of pitch and rhythm, followed by study of Western harmony, including part-writing, modified species counterpoint and Roman numeral analysis. All students enrolled in the course must take a music reading examination to be completed no later than the first class meeting.

MUSC 1215. Music Theory 1 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1305. Principles of four-voice composition in common-practice style. Includes all diatonic chords, and seventh chords, and their inversions.

MUSC 1221. Jazz Theory/Improvisation 1 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A practical and theoretical course, combining jazz harmony and counterpoint with improvisational experience in the classroom. Major topics include chord/scale relationships, modal theory, chord progressions, formal analysis, thematic and motivic improvisation.

MUSC 1222. Jazz Theory/Improvisation 2 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1225. A practical and theoretical course, combining jazz harmony and counterpoint with improvisational experience in the classroom. Major topics include chord/scale relationships, modal theory, chord progressions, formal analysis, thematic and motivic improvisation.

MUSC 1305. Music Fundamentals (0-5-2) Fundamentals of pitch and rhythmic notation with an introduction to solfege syllables and basic keyboard skills. Analysis and study of four-part harmony and voice leading. This course is intended for music majors and for non-majors with departmental approval.

MUSC 1314. Skills 1 (1-1-1)Prerequisite: Music major status or departmental approval. Co-requisite: MUSC 1214. Aural skills and beginning keyboard skills. Introduction to diatonic melodies sung with solfege, simple and compound rhythms, and melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation, coupled with beginning piano techniques, including triad accompaniments, scales, and reading facility.

MUSC 1315. Music Skills 1 (0-3-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 1305; Co-requisite: MUSA 2313. A laboratory experience involving ear training, sight singing, and keyboard skills.

MUSC 2201. Music Theory 2 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Further techniques of modulation, chromatic harmony, and two and three-part forms.

MUSC 2202. Music Theory 3 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2201. Analytical and technical examination of the music of the 19th and 20th centuries, including forms and impressionist and atonal techniques.

MUSC 2301. Music Skills 2 (0-2-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 1315. A laboratory experience involving ear training and sight-singing skills.

MUSC 2302. Music Skills 3 (0-2-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 2301. Continuation of MUSC 2301 with topics paralleling content of MUSC 2202. Course includes sight-singing, dictation, and rhythmic exercises.

MUSC 2311. Jazz Aural Skills 1 (1-1-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 1314. A laboratory course involving ear training, sight singing and transcription of jazz idioms, as well as a basic introduction to standard, non-jazz keyboard techniques (including scales and triads).

MUSC 2312. Jazz Aural Skills 2 (0-2-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 2311 with a C or better. A laboratory course involving ear training, sight singing and transcription of jazz idioms, in more advanced context than the previous semester.

MUSC 2313. Jazz Aural Skills 3 (1-1-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 2312 with a C or better. A laboratory course involving ear training, sight singing and transcription of jazz idioms.

MUSC 2510. Fundamentals of Audio Technology (3-0-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 1214. An introduction to physical acoustics and physical properties of sound, wave mechanics, acoustic measurements, tuning, and temperament, perceptual properties of sound, microphone techniques, psychoacoustics, basic electricity, principles and practice of recording, and an overview of the recording studio.

MUSC 2511. Recording Technology 1 (3-0-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 2510 with a C or better. An introduction to the basics of digital recording technology. Topics include digital recording systems, microphone design, microphone placement, and basic mixing technique.

MUSC 2512. Recording Technology 2 (3-0-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 2511 with a C or better. Continuation of MUSC 2511. Topics include recording console theory and operation, advanced microphone design and techniques, signal processing and digital effects equipment, hard-disc recording and reproduction, multi-track recording, multi-channel mixing, signal processing, and issues in multiple microphone arrays and stereo imaging.

MUSC 3115. Counterpoint (2-0-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Examination and exploration of the techniques and disciplines of the best practices of 18th century counterpoint.

MUSC 3116. Form and Analysis (2-0-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Analytical method applied to standard and non-standard forms of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

MUSC 3117. Instrumentation and Transcription (3-0-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Ranges and characteristics of band and orchestra instruments, and principles of arranging for vocal or instrumental ensembles.

MUSC 3205. Opera Workshop 2 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 1205. An advanced workshop applying the full skills needed for a successful career on the singing stage.  May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 3228. Music History to Mozart (3-1-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Chronological study of the development of Western music; an in-depth study of musical thought and practice.

MUSC 3229. Music History Beethoven to Present (3-1-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 2202.  Chronological study of the development of Western music; an in-depth study of musical thought and practice.

MUSC 3230. Jazz History to the Swing Era (3-0-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 1226. The course traces the development of jazz through its origina in ragtime, minstrel shows, to big bands, vocalists and the prominent solo musicians of the swing era.

MUSC 3231. Jazz History: Bebop and Beyond (3-0-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 3230 with a C or better. The course continues to trace the development of jazz from the birth of bebop in the 1950s, cool jazz and the avant-garde, fusion, neo-classical jazz and the contemporary jazz idioms of today.

MUSC 3235. Musical Theatre Performance (1-2-2)Prerequisite: THEA 1245 or THEA 1315 or MUSA 1211 or higher. An exploration of performing techniques in the musical theatre.

MUSC 3305. Jazz Improvisation (0-3-1)Prerequisite: MUSC 2201. Introduction to jazz improvisation techniques. May be repeated for credit.

MUSC 3306. Opera/Musical Theatre Production (0-2-1)Prerequisite: Audition and permission of instructor. Participation in a musical theatre or opera production. May be taken four times for credit.

MUSC 3307. Fretboard Harmony (1-2-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1305 with a grade of C or better. A study of the guitar's fretboard, including scales, fingering analysis, harmony, and harmonic inversion in all positions.

MUSC 3311. Computer Music 1 (2-1-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 2512 with a C or better. Study of the essential componenets of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology; sythesizer and sequencer capabilities; sequencer recording and editing.

MUSC 3312. Computer Music 2 (2-1-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 3311 with a C or better. Continuation of MUSC 3311. Instroduction to object-oriented programming environments (MAX/MSP) and real-time audito synthesis (SuperCOllider).

MUSC 4101. Composition 1 (2-0-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Techniques of composition. Simple exercises and short compositions.

MUSC 4102. Composition 2 (2-0-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 4101. Emphasis on longer compositions for vocal or instrumental combinations.

MUSC 4555. Special Topics in Music (3-0-3)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. An in-depth study of a selected topic in music. May be taken twice for credit with change of topic.

MUSC 4899. Independent Study (2-3 hours)Prerequisite: Approval of Director of School of Music. Independent research.

MUSC 5216. Choral Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Historical and analytical survey of choral literature from the 16th century to the present.

MUSC 5217. Brass Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Historical and analytical study of literature for brass instruments.

MUSC 5218. Song Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. A survey of the art song literature of Germany, Italy, France and the United States from the 17th century to the present. This will include score study and listening assignments.

MUSC 5219. Jazz History (2-1-2)Prerequisites: MUSC 2202 and MUSC 2302. The course traces the development of jazz from minstrel show days, ragtime, blues, and big bands through current jazz idioms.

MUSC 5221. Organ Literature 1 (2-1-2)Prerequisites: MUSC 3228 and MUSC 3229. A survey of the origins of organ music from the Dark Ages through the Baroque era. Major composers, organ builders, and organists of each major style period in every major geographic location will be examined and investigated. All major information regarding this literature will be presented and studied.

MUSC 5222. Organ Literature 2 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 5221. A survey of organ literature from the Classical era through the end of the 20th Century. Major composers, organ builders, and organists of each major style period will be examined.

MUSC 5223. Guitar Literature 1 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. This course will study the history and development of the lute and guitar literature from the Renaissance through the contemporary era.

MUSC 5224. Guitar Literature 2 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 5223. This course will focus on in-depth study of the history and development of the lute and guitar literature from the Renaissance through the contemporary era.

MUSC 5225. Opera and Oratorio Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisites: MUSC 2202. A survey of opera and oratorio literature from the Baroque era to the present. This will include score study and listening assignments.

MUSC 5226. Flute Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. A chronological study of important solo literature written for the flute from the 17th century to the present.

MUSC 5228. Piano Literature through Classicism (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. A survey of the historical, stylistic, formal, and aesthetic features of stringed keyboard literature from Bach through the Classic period.

MUSC 5229. Piano Literature Romantic through Contemporary Eras (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. A survey of the historical, stylistic, formal, and aesthetic features of piano literature of the Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary periods.

MUSC 5236. String Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Historical/analytical study of ensemble literature for string instruments from the classical period to the 20th century.

MUSC 5237. Symphonic Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Survey of symphonic literature from the 17th century to the present.

MUSC 5238. Wind Ensemble Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Historical and analytical survey of wind literature from the chamber, band, and military repertoires. Focus on major composers and standard wind literature from the 16th century to the present.

MUSC 5239. Woodwind Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. A chronological study of the literature for woodwind instruments.

MUSC 5245. Music Technology (2-1-2)Prerequisite: Junior Standing Music Majors. A hands-on approach for musicians to explore new technologies and their application to music. The class will cover basic computer skills, web design, computer-assisted instruction, digital audio, MIDI and music notation from a hardware and software perspective.

MUSC 5246. Percussion Literature (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Historical and analytical study of literature for percussion instruments.

MUSC 5247. Music Technology 2 (2-1-2)Prerequisite: MUSC 5245U. A hands-on opportunity for students to work with new technologies in multimedia creation.

MUSC 6115. Musicology (3-0-3) An in-depth study of musical thought and application.

MUSC 6740. Graduate Theory Seminar (3-0-3) Specialized analytical techniques in Schenkerian and atonal theory.
