Undergraduate Minors
The following is a listing of approved undergraduate minors offered at Columbus State University. The requirements for each minor are listed; at least one-half of the course work must be taken at Columbus State University. Courses taken to satisfy Core Area A through E may not be counted as coursework in the minor. Courses required in Area F, G and H of a student's major may be applied toward a minor as long as the minor field and the major field are from significantly different disciplines.

Accounting (for business majors only)
18 semester hours to include ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ACCT 3111, ACCT 3112, ACCT 3125, and ACCT 4141.
African-American Studies
15 semester hours selected from HIST 3115, HIST 3116, HIST 5112, HIST 5566, ENGL 3131, ENGL 3132, POLS 3116, MUSC 3230, MUSC 5219, or SOCI 3117. Students may apply 3 to 6 elective hours toward the minor provided the courses contain significant content pertaining to African-American studies. The elective courses must be approved by the chair of the Department of History and Geography.
Anthropology
18 semester hours including ANTH 1105, two courses selected from ANTH 1107, 1145, or 2136, and nine semester hours of upper-division ANTH courses.
Art
18 semester hours in ARTS classes including ARTS 1010, either ARTS 1020 or ARTS 1030, and a minimum of nine semester hours completed at 3000 level or above. A minimum Grade of "C" or better is required for each course. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor. Students interested in exploring Painting, Photography, or Printmaking are advised to take ARTS 1020, and those interested in taking Sculpture or Ceramics are advised to take ARTS 1030.
Art History
18 semester hours to include two of the following courses: ARTH 2125, ARTH 2126, or ARTH 2127 and 12 additional hours of ARTH courses at the 3000-level or above. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor.
Applied Statistics
18 semester hours including STAT 1127, STAT 3127, and 12 semester hours from the following: STAT 5117, STAT 5118, STAT 5119, STAT 5176, STAT 5177, and STAT 5555.
Asian Studies
15 semester hours including three semester hours in lower division CHIN and JAPN courses and 12 semester hours from the following courses: BUSA 3135, HIST 5555, HIST 5558, MGMT 4116, POLS 3139, POLS 4155, and POLS 4178. The following selected topics courses may also be used for the minor if the topic has an Asian focus: ARTH 3555, ARTS 3555, GEOL 3555, ITDS 1156, and POLS 3555. At least nine semester hours must be in upper division courses and no more than nine semester hours may be in the same discipline. The director of the Center for International Education is responsible for advising and approval of topics and transfer courses.
Astronomy
17 semester hours including ASTR 1105, ASTR 1305 and ASTR 1106. The remaining 10 hours will come from the following courses: ASTR 3105, ASTR 3115, ASTR 3205, ASTR 4899, PHYS/ASTR 5555, or upper-level science as approved by astronomy advisor. (Note that MATH 1131 and PHYS 2211/2311 are pre-requisites for the upper-level astronomy courses, which can be applied to Areas A and D.) If ASTR 1105/1305 and ASTR 1106 are applied to Area D, PHYS 2211/2311 and PHYS 2212/2312 may be applied to the minor in place of those courses.
Audio Technology
18 semester hours to include MUSC 2511, MUSC 2512, MUSC 4699, MUSC 4899, MUSA 1215. Choose two of the following: MUSC 3311, MUSC 3312, MUSC 3315, Other 3000 or 4000-level Special Topics Music Course or Independent Study. This minor is available to auditioned and accepted music majors after a successful interview with the director of Audio Technology.
Biology
18 semester hours as follows: BIOL 2285, BIOL 3215K, BIOL 3216K, BIOL 3217K, and BIOL 3218K.
Business
18 semester hours including ACCT 2101, BUSA 2106, ECON 2106, MGMT 3109 OR 3115, MKTG 3109 OR 3115 and one of the following international courses: BUSA 3135, BUSA, 3555, ECON 3165, MGMT 4116 or MKTG 4145. Grade of "C" or better is required for each course.
Chemistry
18 semester hours of CHEM courses excluding CHEM 1151/1151L, CHEM 1152/1152L, CHEM 1211/1211L, and CHEM 1212/1212L.
Communication
15 semester hours in COMM courses, excluding COMM 1110 and including nine semester hours at the 3000 level or above. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor.
Computer Science
19 semester hours including CPSC 1301, CPSC 1301L, CPSC 1302, CPSC 2108, and nine semester hours of computer science courses at the 3000 level or above.
Criminal Justice
18 semester hours including CRJU 1105, CRJU 2105, CRJU 2145, CRJU 3107, CRJU 3117, and CRJU 4165. A grade of "C" or better is required in each CRJU course.
Dance
18 semester hours. The Dance Minor is under the Theatre Department as part of the College of the Arts. The Dance Minor consists of 18 credit hours of Dance Skills, Dance History and Dance Composition courses. Required courses include THEA 1331, THEA 1351, THEA 3135, THEA 3235, and ten more credits from the following courses: THEA 1223, THEA 1316, THEA 1321, THEA 1322, THEA 1332, THEA 1341, THEA 1342, THEA 1352, THEA 1375, THEA 2331, and THEA 3555.
Early Childhood Education
18 semester hours including EDEC 3255, EDEC 3256, and 12 semester hours of approved electives.
Earth and Space Sciences- Environmental Science
18 semester hours. Take 4 hours from ENVS1105/1105L or ENVS 1205K, 4 hours from BIOL 1215K or GEOL 1121/1121L and 10 hours of 3000+ level ENVS courses. The following courses may be counted towards the 10 hour upper level requirement: GEOL 3225, GEOL 5117U, GEOL 5165U, GEOL 5255U.
Economics
18 semester hours including ECON 2105, ECON 2106, ECON 3136, ECON 3145, ECON 3147, and ECON 3165. Grade of "C" or better is required for each course.
English - Creative Writing Track
18 semester hours to include ENGL 3105, ENGL 3106, ENGL 3107, and three of the following courses: ENGL 3108, ENGL 3109, ARTS 4237, ENGL 5157, ENGL 5158, ENGL 5159.
English - Literature Track
18 semester hours of ENGL courses at the 2000 level or above, including nine semester hours at the 3000 level or above.
English - Linguistics
15 semester hours including ENGL 2136, ENGL 5147, ENGL 5165, ENGL 5168, and one of the following courses: ENGL 5148, ENGL 5166, or ENGL 5167.
English - Professional Writing Track
18 semester hours to include ENGL 2157, ENGL 3158, and four of the following courses: ENGL 3155, ENGL 3156, ENGL 3159, ENGL 3176, ENGL 5149, and ENGL 5155.
Exercise Science
18 semester hours to include EXSC 3135, EXSC 4131, EXSC 4132, EXSC 4135, EXSC 4137, and EXSC 5135.
Finance (for business majors only)
15 semester hours to include FINC 3105, FINC 3115, FINC 3125, FINC 4135, and one other FINC elective.
Gender Studies
18 Credits with a grade of no less than C in any course. Students are required to SOCI 2293. Students must select five courses from the following course selection from at least three different departments: ANTH 1105, ANTH 3107, COMM 3145, COMM 4107, CRJU 2116, CRJU 3135, ENGL 3117, HIST 3555, HIST 5555, HIST 5559, HIST 5575, POLS 3134, POLS 3165, POLS 3555, SOCI 3107, SOCI 3129, SOCI 3138.
Geography
16 semester hours to include GEOG 1100, GEOG 2215, GEOG 3108 and GEOG 4000 and two courses in GEOG at the 3000 level or above. A grade of C or better is required of all courses in the minor. Internships and independent study courses may be used to satisfy up to three credit hours for this minor.
Geology
18 semester hours of GEOL courses with at least nine hours of upper division coursework. Courses taken to satisfy Area D of the Core may not be counted towards the minor.
Health Science
18 semester hours as follows: HESC 2105, HESC 5106U, HESC 5115U, HESC 2125, HESC 4105, and HESC 4106.
History
18 semester hours in history courses, including HIST 3125 and 15 additional semester hours at the 3000 level or above. Two courses must be 5000 level courses, one in the field of U.S. History and one in either European or World History. Internships and independent study courses may be used to satisfy up to three credit hours for this minor.
International Business (for business majors only)
15 semester hours to include BUSA 3135, MGMT 4116, MKTG 4145, FINC 3156, and choose one other from the following list: BUSA 3555, MISM 3118, ECON 3165, or POLS 4166.
Jazz Studies
12 semester hours to include MUSC 1221, MUSC 1222, MUSC 1223, MUSC 1224, MUSP 3060, MUSC 5219U, and MUSP 3358. This minor is available to auditioned and accepted music majors after a successful interview with the director of Jazz Studies.
Latin American Studies
18 semester hours from the following courses: ANTH 5305, ANTH 5515, ANTH 5555, ARTH 3555, BUSA 3135, COMM 4555, ECON 3165, HIST 3135, HIST 3136, HIST 3137, HIST 5535U, MGMT 4116, POLS 3555, SPAN 2002, SPAN 3150, SPAN 3160, SPAN 3170, SPAN 3175 and SPAN 5555. Additional selected topics courses (ANTH 5305, ANTH 5515, ANTH 5555, ARTH 3555, COMM 4555, ECON 3165, POLS 3555 and SPAN 5555) may be used toward the minor but must be approved by the Director of the Center for International Education.
Management (for business majors only)
15 semester hours to include MGMT 3115, MGMT 3135, MGMT 4115, and two other MGMT electives.
Management Information Systems (for business majors only)
18 semester hours to include MISM 2115, MISM 3115, MISM 3125, MISM 4135, MISM 4145, and one other MISM elective.
Marketing (for business majors only)
15 semester hours to include MKTG 3115, MKTG 3135, MKTG 3136, MKTG 4135 or MKTG 4185, and one other MKTG elective.
Mathematics
17 semester hours including MATH 1131, MATH 1132, and nine semester hours of MATH courses at the 3000 level or above. If MATH 1131 or MATH 1132 is used to satisfy Area A or Area D of the core curriculum, one additional mathematics course, at any level, must be taken for each course used in the core.
Military Science and Advance Leadership
15 semester hours including six semester hours from the following: MSAL 1215 & 1215L, MSAL 1216 & 1216L, MSAL 2225 & 2225L, and MSAL 2226 & 2226L, and 9 semester hours from the following: MSAL 3231 & 3231L, MSAL 3232 & 3232L, MSAL 4245 & 4245L, and MSAL 4795 & 4795L.
Music
18 semester hours including MUSC 1215, MUSC 2201, MUSA 1211, MUSA 1212, MUSA 2211, MUSA 2212, MUSA 3211, MUSC 3228, MUSC 3229, one semester of either MUSP 3070/3080/3090, and two semester hours of 3000-level electives. Students must perform an audition in their principal performing area and be accepted at a level consistent with an entering first-year music major. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor.
Philosophy
15 semester hours of philosophy courses, including PHIL 2010 and PHIL 2500, and 9 semester hours of upper division philosophy courses. However, if either PHIL 2010 or PHIL 2500 is used to fulfill a core requirement in Areas A through E, the courses may be replaced by any other upper or lower division philosophy course.
Physics
18 semester hours including PHYS 2211/2311, PHYS 2212/2312, and 10 hours from the following courses: PHYS 3100, PHYS 3200, PHYS 4100, PHYS 4205, and PHYS 5555. Select from the following if Principles of Physics courses are applied to Area D: ASTR 1105, ASTR 1106, ASTR 3105, ASTR 3115, ASTR 3205, ASTR 5105, ENGR 2116, ENGR 2117, ENGR 2165, ENGR 2316, ISCI 5555, and PHYS 1325.
Political Science
18 semester hours in political science courses including POLS 2101 and 15 semester hours at the 3000 level or above. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor.
Psychology
17 semester hours of psychology courses at the 3000 level or above.
Sociology
15 semester hours of sociology courses at the 3000 level or above.
Spanish
18 semester hours including SPAN 3150 and SPAN 3160. Select two courses from the following Peninsular Studies options: SPAN 3170, SPAN 4115, SPAN 4117, SPAN 4118, SPAN 4555, SPAN 4899. Select two course from the following Latin American Studies options: SPAN 3175, SPAN 4116, SPAN 4119, SPAN 4120, SPAN 4175, SPAN 4555, SPAN 4899.
Theatre Arts
18 semester hours of theatre courses excluding THEA 1100 and including THEA 1245, THEA 1365, THEA 3175 or 3176, and a minimum of one semester hour of THEA 1435. A minimum of nine semester hours must be completed at the 3000 level or above. Internships and independent study courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for this minor.
UTeach (for math and science majors only)
16-17 semester hours to include UTCH 1201, UTCH 1202, UTCH 2105, BIOL 2285 (for biology majors only) or UTCH 2215, UTCH 3205, UTCH 4205, and 3 hours of approved upper level coursework in math/science/education. Upper level courses require Admission to Teacher Education. Field-based course require cleared background check.
