Organizational Note

John Zeigler and Edwin Peacock were friends of Carson McCullers and of Reeves McCullers, and of the Smith family. Peacock introduced Carson Smith and Reeves McCullers

Scope and Content

This collection consists of items relating to Carson McCullers and her circle. They include newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, books and some correspondence.

  • Folder 1 - Photocopies of 34 letters from Carson McCullers and Reeves McCullers to Edwin Peacock, 1940s-1963 The location of the originals of these letters is unknown, but they may be in the Peacock collection at the Rubenstein Library at Duke University. Also in the folder is a letter of 18 January, 2004, from John Zeigler to Cathy Fussell, director of the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, saying, "I find that I loaned Dan Griffin the letters to Edwin from Carson or Reeves. He is going to have copies made and will send them to you."
  • Folder 2 - Newspaper and magazine clippings relating to reviews of works by and about Carson McCullers, 1970s-2002
  • Folder 3 - Two photographs related to John Vincent Adams. The first one is a photocopy of a photograph of Edwin Peacock, Carson McCullers, Reeves McCullers and John Vincent Adams, taken in the 1930s (?). The second is a photograph taken by John Vincent Adams in 1979. This photograph shows (from left) Edwin Peacock, Marjorie Hoxsey, Virginia Carr, Maxine Brown, John Zeigler, and Ghreta Adams. The back of the photograph lists the names and includes the caption "Sarasota - Feb. 1979." Written in ink is "3/5/79".
  • Folder 4 - Framed first edition photograph of Carson McCullers taken by Louise Dahl-Wolfe, 1940. The photograph was given to Mr. Zeigler by Carson McCullers. It is at the McCullers house on Stark Avenue.

  • Folder 11 - Letter from Edwin Peacock to Louis and Aubrey Clements thanking them for sending him clippings and a list of attendees of the recent McCullers Symposium held in Columbus, GA. He also discusses mutual friends, as well as health issues of Edward Newbury a friend of his and John Zeigler, February 25, 1988
  • Folder 12 - Letter from John Zeigler to Cathy Fussell, director of the Carson McCullers Center, enclosing three letters from David Diamond to Robert Walden during Diamond's stay at Yaddo in May and June of 1942. Zeigler says that "Walden was introduced to the Smiths while he was stationed at Fort Benning and saw them often. Carson visited him and his friend Edward Newbury in Charlotte and were at the opening of the Member of the Wedding." January 18, 2005
  • Folder 13 -- Note from John Zeigler to Cathy Fussell, director of the Carson McCullers Center, enclosing a piece by Roberta (Topie) Johnson Steinger, postmarked September 17, 2010
    • The note reads, in its entirety, "Dear Cathy, I have just come across this piece by Roberta (Topie) Johnson Steiner, Carson's first cousin, who introduced me to Edwin by mail. She had been the roommate of a good friend of mine at college and editor of her college magazine. Sorry I won't be at the Conference, but my travelling days are over. I'm looking forward to a visit by Roger Harris in October. All good wishes, John"
  • Folder 14 - Letter from Cathy Fussell to John Zeigler asking for information on a photograph., July 24, 2009
    • Zeigler wrote his responses on her letter and returned it to her. There is also a photograph of Carson McCullers and Marielle Bancou probably made in the early 1960s.
