Phalo Study Club Collection (MC 207)
Organizational Note
The Phalo Study Club was organized by Jane Knight and Nancy White in 1955. They gathered together a group of young Columbus women interested in creating a study group modeled after a familiar one of their mother's generation, the Philo Club. The name PHALO was decided upon denoting the studies of philosophy, history, arts, literature, and oratory. The object of the club was to study and discuss chosen cultural topics. The first year's program, Georgia on my mind, began the fall of 1955 with the following charter members: Janice Biggers, Barbara Henkel, Mary Bumpus (Lindsay) Jane Knight, Olivia Cheatham, Elinor McDougal, Betty Cohen (King), Jan Nuckolls (Johnston), Frances Coney (Hamlett), Shirley Pekor (James), Courtney Gaines, Ann Rhea, Becky, Gilbert (Duggan), Marjorie Thrasher, Edwina Hahn, Nancy White, Marian Hech and Ruth Woolfolk.
