Annie Wheelus Collectiion (MC 216)
Biographical Note
Annie B. Wheelus was born March 18, 1914 in Salem Alabama and died February 22, 2006 in Phenix City, Alabama at the age of 91. She is buried in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Her parents were Byrd Love Wheelus and Annie Virginia Harris Wheelus. She had retired from Civil Service with 30 years of service. Ms. Wheelus was the State Official for the Alabama DAR, a founding member of the Coweta Town chapter of the DAR, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the East Alabama Historical Society. She was a past member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Phenix City, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her sister Alice Virginia Wheelus and brothers J.T. Wheelus and Hugh Dorsey Wheelus. She also had two nieces, Joanna Wheelus and Ashley Wheelus.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of 5 boxes of materials divided by DAR material, Wheelus family material and an assorted box of miscellaneous historical items.
The collection could be divided into two main parts; that which pertains to the Coweta Town chapter of the DAR, of which Annie and Alice were regents, registrar, and treasurer; and that which pertains to the Wheelus and Harris families and genealogy of the Russell County, Alabama area families of DAR members
Boxes 1 and 2 pertain to the Coweta Town Chapter of the DAR. Boxes 3 and 5 contain letters, family history, scrapbooks, and notebooks belonging to the Wheelus family. Box 4 contains an assortment of family memorabilia 1732-2002 5 boxes (5 l.f.)
Provenance
The material in this collection was purchased from an Estate Sale at the former home of Annie Wheelus in Phenix City. Dean Callie McGinnis, the Director of the CSU Library, was instrumental in purchasing the contents of two filing cabinets.
