Frank Brown Collection (MC 283)
Biographical Note
Frank Douglas Brown was the third president of Columbus College (now Columbus State University) from 1988 to 2008. A native of Flomaton, Alabama, Dr. Brown received a bachelor of business administration degree in 1962 from the University of Southern Mississippi, his Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama in 1969 and a PhD in Higher Education in 1974 from Florida State University. Before coming to Columbus College, he worked with IBM from 1969 to 1972 as a systems engineer and marketing representative and was an associate executive director of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education from 1974 to 1978. He also served as an assistant vice chancellor for finance and operations at the University of Houston from 1978 to 1980 and the interim vice chancellor for finance and operations from 1980 to 1981. Before becoming President of Columbus College, he held positions as vice president for business and finance for six and a half years and also held an academic appointment in the Abbott Turner School of Business as an associate professor of management.
Brown's active involvement in area organizations demonstrated his level of commitment to the community. Dr. Brown serves or has served as a member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross, the Bradley Center, the Columbus Arts Council, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Southeastern Music Center, the Historic Columbus Foundation and the United Way of Columbus. He is also on the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Columbus and an active member of the Rotary Club of Columbus.
Under Dr. Brown's leadership, Columbus College became Columbus State University, enrollment drastically grew, and the creation of a downtown campus revitalized downtown Columbus and the University. By his retirement, CSU offered more than 50 undergraduate degrees and more than 25 Master's or specialist programs. Enrollment in 2008 was at its highest at 7,500 and award-winning faculty and staff numbered more than 600. He was involved in numerous projects such as main campus student apartments, Thomas Y. Whitley Clock Tower, Lumpkin Center, Cunningham Center and the Spencer House in Oxford, England.
Scope and Content
This collection includes records that cover Dr. Brown's presidency (1988-2008). The collection is arranged into two series, the first being subject file records of his presidency. Included in this series is correspondence and information about special university projects such as the Cunningham Center, the Thomas Y. Whitley Clock Tower, and the Bradley Performing Arts Center which were built during his time in office. Also present are materials discussing Dr. Brown's many philanthropic community activities such as his involvement in the American Lung Association, the Historic Columbus Foundation, and the First Baptist Church of Columbus. An important part of this series includes correspondence and speeches concerning Columbus College's transition to a university, which occurred under his tenure in 1996. The second series deals with materials regarding his inauguration which occurred in October 1988. Included are programs from his inauguration ceremony, correspondence involved in the planning, and a VHS tape of the ceremony. A large portion of this series includes congratulation letters to Dr. Brown from universities and colleges around the United States. 1981-2008 65 l.f.
