Columbus Board of
Commissioners Minutes (SMC 26)
Organizational Note
This collection details the establishment of the city of
Columbus, Georgia in 1828 and its early development. General Elias
Beall was appointed commissioner for the purpose of laying out a
town at Coweta Falls in Muscogee County and “of disposing of
the same”.
Scope and Content
These transcribed minutes record the appointment of men to various
positions, from chain carriers for the surveyors to town
councilmen. This council set rules for who paid tolls to cross the
bridge to Alabama, how close to the river trees could be cut and
how the sale of land to private individuals and to businesses would
be conducted, among many other rules and regulations. These
transcripts were created in 1940, probably as a WPA project.
