HESC 1115. Interpersonal Relations (3-0-0) Emphasizes attitudes, skills, and knowledge necessary for developing and maintaining healthy relationships with other people.
HESC 1116. Interviewing Techniques (3-0-3) Emphasizes basic knowledge and skills involved with interviewing people in a variety of settings.
HESC 2105. Personal Health (3-0-3) Principles of personal health and total fitness physical, mental, social, emotional, and environmental. Emphasis on taking personal responsibility for one's health.
HESC 2115. Group Communication (3-0-3) Study of the aspects of group dynamics with focus on leadership, decision-making, setting goals, and resolving conflict.
HESC 2125. Applied Nutrition (3-0-3) An overview of the elements of nutrition as well as current issues in food protection, consumption, and dieting. Health implications for these topics will be emphasized throughout the course.
HESC 2165. Assertiveness Training (2-0-2) A skills-oriented approach to more interpersonally effective responses to difficult situations which may be particularly discomforting.
HESC 3105. Survey of Environmental Health (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Overview of the various components of the environment and its relationship to health and disease and means of control.
HESC 3107. Habit Forming Substances (3-0-3) Physical, psychological, social, and legal dimensions of habituating substances.
HESC 3125. Crisis Intervention (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Course will acquaint students with types of crises encountered by human services workers and teach appropriate intervention methods.
HESC 3145. The Dysfunctional Personality (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Approaches taken to the assessment and treatment of the emotionally-dysfunctional person. The role of various agencies and health professionals in meeting personal needs also will be evaluated.
HESC 3165. Working with the Aged (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Techniques of helping the aged deal with the mental, emotional, and physical adjustments inherent in this stage of life.
HESC 4105. Community Health Organization (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Organizational structure and service roles of official and nonofficial health agencies at the various level: local, state, national, and international.
HESC 4106. Methods and Materials in Health Education (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Introduction to the methods of education for health. Curriculum patterns in health education and resources available for health instruction.
HESC 4107. Fundamentals of School Health (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. An introduction to the structures and services of a comprehensive school health program.
HESC 4115. Principles of Epidemiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Causal factors in health and disease with analysis of selected diseases.
HESC 4129. Death and Dying (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. An evaluation of current concepts of moral, legal, medical, and psychological aspects of dying and death. Strategies for the health professional assisting people through this final stage of life will be emphasized.
HESC 4145. Working with Families (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing. Principles and dynamics of family living and its impact on the development of a healthy individual, with emphasis on the techniques of developing strategies for helping families change.
HESC 4698. Internship (1-15-4) Prerequisites: Senior standing and consent of department. Field experience in an appropriate agency or occupational setting where the student can gain practical experience in health services. (S/U grading.)
HESC 4795. Seminar in Health Science (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Junior standing and consent of department. Special topics and problems in the health sciences. May be taken twice for credit if topics differ.
HESC 4899. Independent Study (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Senior standing, 24 hours of HESC courses, and consent of instructor. Areas and topics vary with professors.
HESC 5105. Advanced Concepts in Environmental Health (3-0-3) Prerequisite: HESC 3105 or six semester hours in natural, behavioral, or health sciences. The complex interaction between humans and their environments with implications for human health will be featured. Quality of life issues and environmental decision making will be emphasized.
HESC 6105. Consumer Health (3-0- 3) An analysis of information requisites to being an informed consumer of health related products. Fraud, quackery, and consumer protection systems will be included.
HESC 6106. Behavioral Determinants of Health and Disease (3-0-3) Exploration of mind-body connections as related to the development of physical illness as well as optimal well being. Emphasis is on current research in this subject area.
HESC 6107. Human Sexuality (3-0-3) An analysis of the issues surrounding the nature of human sexuality, its genesis, its expressions and its influence on health and disease, and educational strategies useful in sex education.
HESC 6188. Contemporary Health Problems (3-0-3) A study of current health problems of major concern in the U.S., their antecedents and role of the educational system in their mitigation.
HESC 6795. Seminar in Alcohol and Drug Abuse (3-0-3) Analysis of the problems of substance abuse, intervention strategies and school-based prevention strategies.
