SPAN - Spanish

SPAN 1001. Elementary Spanish 1 (3-0-3) SPAN 1001. Elementary Spanish 1 (3-0-3) Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish and to the culture of Spanish-speaking regions.

SPAN 1002. Elementary Spanish 2 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 1001. Continued listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish with further study of the culture of Spanish-speaking regions.

SPAN 2001. Intermediate Spanish 1 (3-0-3)  Prerequisite: SPAN 1002. A more advanced course in composition, conversation, grammar, and reading. This course aims at a thorough study of the Spanish idiom, pronunciation, verb study, oral expression, and functional grammar. Cultural study focuses on Spanish-speaking America.

SPAN 2002. Intermediate Spanish 2 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 2001. An intermediate course in composition, conversation, grammar, and reading. Aimed at an intermediate knowledge of the Spanish idiom, pronunciation, verb study, oral expression, and functional grammar.

SPAN 3150. Advanced Conversation (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 2002 or equivalent. Conducted in Spanish, this course offers students a series of progressive activities to raise the level of proficiency within the context of daily Hispanic culture. Supportive activities include grammar review and readings closely related to oral activities.

SPAN 3160. Advanced Grammar and Composition (3-0-3)  Prerequisite: SPAN 2002 or equivalent. Practice in writing letters, brief articles, themes, and reports. Review of selected segments of grammar.

SPAN 3170. Studies in Civilization: Spain (3-0-3) Prerequisites: SPAN 3150 and SPAN 3160. An overview of the cultural history of Spain and history of the Spanish language from the formation of the nation to contemporary Spain. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3175. Studies in Civilization: Latin America (3-0-3) Prerequisites: SPAN 3150 and 3160. An overview of the cultural history of Spanish America from the pre-Columbian period to contemporary Spanish America, as reflected in the arts and literature. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 4899. Independent Study (2-6 hours) Prerequisite: Consent of department chair. Independent study of topics of material approved in advance by the instructor. May be repeated for credit with consent of the Department chair.

SPAN 5101. Problems of Spanish Grammar (3-0-3) A concentrated treatment of recurring difficulties in spoken and written Spanish. Particular focus is on the subjunctive mood, the true imperative command forms, and the sequence of tenses.

SPAN 5102. Advanced Problems of Spanish Grammar (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 5101. A study of persistent problems of Spanish, especially as related to translation. Included are the passive voice, resultant state, par vs. Para, ser and estar, and the preterite vs. Imperfect.

SPAN 5555. Selected Topics in Spanish (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Spanish 3170 or SPAN 3175. A study of various aspects of the Spanish-speaking world such as literary movements, specific writers, film, and the press. Topics will vary each semester; the course is designed to enhance the students' written and spoken expression in Spanish. May be taken twice for credit with change of topic.
