MUSE 2209. Guitar Methods (1-1-1) Prerequisites: MUSC 1215 and MUSC 1315. Basic principles of guitar tuning, playing primary chords in common keys, strumming and finger picking accompaniments.
MUSE 3201. Basic Conducting (2-1-2) Prerequisites: MUSC 2202 and MUSC 2302. Fundamental conducting patterns, skills, and terminology in both choral and instrumental genres.
MUSE 3202. Intermediate Conducting (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3201. Intermediate conducting patterns, skills, and terminology in both choral and instrumental genres.
MUSE 3205. Vocal-Choral Methods (3-1-3) Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Basic principles of singing. A survey of vocal techniques and choral methods for teaching in the secondary schools.
MUSE 3206. Transcription Skills for Music Educators (1-1-1) Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. Development of skills in transcribing, adapting, and arranging music for school performing groups and classroom situations.
MUSE 3210. Music for the Elementary Classroom Teacher (3-1-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Basic music, conducting, and simple instruments for the classroom teacher. Contains observations of elementary classroom music teaching. Not open to music majors for credit.
MUSE 3211. Organ Pedagogy 1 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A comprehensive survey of historic and current organ method texts and a practical guide to the following essential elements of organ instruction: student motivation toward practicing; basics of early music fingerings and touches and emphasis on ornamentation; basics of modern technique and hymn playing; repertoire choices for teaching at each level of organ study. Observation of master lessons will be included.
MUSE 3212. Organ Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3211. An application of all information surveyed in MUSE 3211. Observation of master lessons and supervised video taped student teaching and weekly review of this instruction by the instructor and other members of the class will be included.
MUSE 3215. Percussion Pedagogy (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A study of the methods, teaching materials, and literature used in percussion teaching from elementary through early advance levels. Course includes laboratory teaching by class members.
MUSE 3216. String Bass Pedagogy (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A study of technique, literature, and methods for teaching string bass. Course includes observation of bass lessons and laboratory teaching by the pedagogy student.
MUSE 3217. Guitar Pedagogy (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Guitar pedagogy and its application to the beginning student. Includes observation and laboratory teaching.
MUSE 3221. Vocal Pedagogy 1 (2-1-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A detailed study of the physiology of the voice, acoustics of singing, characteristics of different voice types, and the demands of various bodies of vocal literature. Course includes observation of voice lessons in the Schwob Department of Music.
MUSE 3222. Vocal Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3221. Development of instructional skills through supervised studio teaching, observation of peers' studio teaching, and demonstration by the instructor.
MUSE 3231. Piano Pedagogy 1 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. A study of the teaching and learning process at the beginning level of piano instruction. Review and performance of technique and literature appropriate for the first two years of instruction.
MUSE 3232. Piano Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3231. Continuation of MUSE 3231 to include a survey of beginning piano methods and small unit, group teaching projects.
MUSE 3241. Diction 1 (1-1-1) Introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and to the fundamentals of enunciation and articulation singing Italian and English.
MUSE 3242. Diction 2 (1-1-1) Prerequisite: MUSE 3241. Continued instruction in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and introduction to the fundamentals of enunciation and articulation singing German and French.
MUSE 3251. Brass Pedagogy 1 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Pedagogical knowledge of private brass instrument teaching (either trumpet, horn, trombone, or euphonium/tuba) including student motivation, tone production, technique, articulations, transpositions, and a survey of literature. Observations of lessons are included.
MUSE 3252. Brass Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3251. A continuation of MUSE 3251.
MUSE 3261. Cello Pedagogy 1 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Cello pedagogy and its application to the beginning student. Observation of working with beginning student.
MUSE 3262. Cello Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3261. Cello pedagogy and its application to the intermediate student. Observation and assisting with intermediate student.
MUSE 3271. Woodwind Pedagogy 1 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Observation of private teaching on student's major instrument; discussion of lessons observed; teaching techniques and philosophy; introduction to elementary repertoire.
MUSE 3272. Woodwind Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3271. Observation of teaching and practice teaching on student's major instrument; discussion of lessons given and observed; introduction to intermediate and advanced repertoire.
MUSE 3281. Violin/Viola Pedagogy 1 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 1215. Violin/Viola pedagogy and its application to the beginning student. Observation of a beginner's class and private lessons.
MUSE 3282. Violin/Viola Pedagogy 2 (1-2-2) Prerequisite: MUSE 3281. Violin/Viola pedagogy and its application to the intermediate student. Observation of one intermediate private student, assisting with middle elementary class, and givin private lessons under supervision.
MUSE 4205. Elementary School Methods (3-1-3) Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education. A study of methods and materials suitable for general music in grades P-6. This study will include Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Orff methods as well as others. Public school observation is required.
MUSE 4206. Secondary School Choral Methods (3-1-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: MUSE 3202. Vocal-choral and general music techniques and materials for the middle and senior high school. Public school observation is required.
MUSE 4207. Secondary School Instrumental Music (3-1-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: MUSE 3202. Instrumental music teaching techniques and materials for the middle and senior high school. Public school observation is required.
MUSE 4208. Marching Band Techniques (3-1-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: MUSE 3202. Survey of marching band problems and techniques culminating in a written half-time show to chosen music. Includes working with a high school marching band during rehearsals.
MUSE 4231. Piano Pedagogy 3 (2-2-3) Prerequisite: MUSE 3232. Study of the intermediate to advancing piano student including the review and performance of appropriate technique and literature. Establishment of the independent teaching studio and the incorporation of technology into the private study curriculum and studio management.
MUSE 4232. Piano Pedagogy 4 (2-2-3) Prerequisite: MUSE 4231. Continuation of MUSE 4231 to include a study of the transfer and adult student.
MUSE 4233. Intern Teaching 1 (1-4-3) Prerequisite: MUSE 3232. Practical, supervised experience in individual and group teaching at the early levels of piano instruction.
MUSE 4234. Intern Teaching 2 (1-4-3) Prerequisite: MUSE 4233. Continuation of MUSE 4233 to include the study of transfer and adult students.
MUSE 4485. Student Teaching (0-40-10) Prerequisites: MUSE 4205 and MUSE 4206/MUSE 4207; Co-requisite: MUSE 4795. Observation and teaching during the entire school day under the guidance of selected instrumental or choral music teachers. (S/U grading.)
MUSE 4555. Special Topics in Music Education (2-0-2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2202. An in-depth study of a selected topic in music education. May be taken twice for credit with change of topic.
MUSE 4795. Seminar in Music Education (1-0-1) Co-requisite: MUSE 4485. The study of selected topics and problems encountered during student teaching.
MUSE 4899. Independent Study in Music Education (2-3 hours) Prerequisite: MUSC 3226. Independent research.

MUSE 6127. Development of the Child's Voice (3-0-3) A study of the vocal development of the pre-adolescent child, including the cambiata male voice.
MUSE 6215. Introduction to Vocal Pedagogy (3-1-3) Introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the vocal mechanism, the diagnosis and correction of vocal problems, and the vocal demands of various styles of solo and ensemble music.
MUSE 6216. Teaching Wind Instruments (1-4-3) One-on-one lessons dealing with pedagogy and techniques on each wind instrument not in the student's principal performance area.
MUSE 6217. Teaching String Instruments (1-4-3) One-on-one lessons dealing with pedagogy and technique on each string instrument other than the student's own (violin, viola, cello, bass).
MUSE 6485. Graduate Music Project (0-2-1) The culminating activity in the Master of Music in Music Education curriculum, providing the opportunity to practice skills developed in the course of studies.
MUSE 6795. Seminar in Music Education (3-0-3) An examination of music education from the perspective of historical, philosophical, and sociological development; and a review of major learning theories and their applications to methodology.
